I don't know if it was drugs or prison I mean't they both lost there last 2 fights, thats probably why they retired. The thread is boxers who show promise and then suddenly don't box again, it seems quite probable that they realised they weren't gonna make it especially May - 2 early knockout defeats in only 3 pro fights.reggaereggae wrote:Can you expand? May was beaten on cuts in both fights I believe.yid14 wrote:I don't know if it was drugs or prison I mean't they both lost there last 2 fights, thats probably why they retired. And I'm sutre Danny Costello was regarded as a brilliant prospect who was lost to drugs
Re: Boxers who show promise and then suddenly dont box again?
Same as Peter Richardson - very good ama, but as a pro his brows just kept splitting horribly. Look at his record on paper and it looks like he was KO'd 3 times but all 3 were cuts stoppages as far as I remember.

Yeah Bernard 'Superbad' Mays was the scourge of the Kronk gym; according to Steward he battered everyone in sparring but was an alcoholic in his early teen years.orbtastic wrote:There was a kid who showed tremendous promise in the amas and was very popular, can't for the life of me remember his name but he was latched onto very quickly by Manny Steward and groomed for big things but he liked a drink too much, even at an early age and drifted away from the sport and eventually died.
Bernard Mayes?
There are some good articles about him on the internet.
Another Kronk sensation who failed to make the pro grade was Octavia Lara. His pro debut saw him headline in front of 10,000 at Auburn Hills yet he barely got into double figures in terms of bouts before he disappeared from the pro scene.
Anyone know what happened to him?

saw this on Saddoboxing forum, it might be Lara, but who knows. from 2008
I know this posting is old but I heard about this posting a couple weeks back. My cousin googled my name and came across this site. To answer your guys questions it was I that decided to step away form boxing. Sometimes things dont work out how you plan them and I decided to move on and do something else with my life. Steward was and will always be a friend of my family and mine. The first time I lost as a professional Ihad problems on the side the same week of the fight. Its no excuse for the loss because Ramirez was a tough and durable opponent. I did what I could for the first 2 or 3 rounds and hurt him but just couldnt finish him off. My mind was not in the fight. I surrounded myself with the wrong people and had "friends" that didnt do me any good and I paid a high price for that mistake. I was in jail for something so stupid days befroe the fight and if it wasnt for Steward I would probably still be there. I left boxing for the next 2 yrs. I had to go thru a lot and gather myself together and when I did I started training again. I fought a few more times fighting at 140 and 147 pounds even though I didnt wiegh it. I just wanted to prove myself to everybody and I didnt care who I fought. I had another lose to another boxer who was also tough and made it mostly a wrestling match but I still take nothing away from Martinez he did what he had to in order to win. I didnt let that get to me I kept trainig hardand fought again. This time on the same card Andy Lee made his debut and he was the co-main event. Along with the main event that was Jonathon Banks. I won in the second round, I never thought that was gonna be my last fight. I trained and trained and 6, 7, 8 months past and still I had not had another fight since. While Andy and Jonathon were fighting often and winning. Thats when I decided to step away again. I believe in karma and I think I paid the price for the previous mistakes I did when I had everything in my favor yrs before. I never even thought about going with anybody else because even though Steward and I never had a formal contract we gave each other our word. That to me is more then a signed paper. I could never see myself with another promoter or manager under a different banner other then KRONK. That was my 2nd home. I think I am living proof of somebody that could have had everything and didnt know or understand how to keep things in line and let some "friends" pull me down. It was my fault for not being smarter. Now I just work a part-time job I have no kids and sometimes I go to a local gym to help young boxers and teach them things that were taught to me. I wish all the boxers from the Kronk Gym the best of luck in all their fights as for me my fighting days are over. I dont believe that Steward over hyped any of us. He has an eye for talent and knows what he is talking about its up to the fighters to respond.

Allen Hall did very well; Andy Holligan beat him but there was absolutely no disgrace in that. Hall would've been in the mix; he had all the skills, power and speed. A double ABA champ at about 19/20. Hall was class.
Re: Boxers who show promise and then suddenly dont box again?
Peter could box and was very powerful at light welter. I boxed around the time that he won the ABA semi finals v John Irwin in 88/89; Peter was very very good and experienced at a young age. He had a bit of bother in his home town (Middlesbrough); think he got stabbed; and went to London; boxing for Repton. He had grown and had his man strength; he stopped just about everyone. As a pro he was doing well, but did cut. The lads he lost against were class as well. I've just looked his BoxRec record up and I'd forgotten about Michael Smyth and Dennis Berry. Could they fight! hells bells! It seems incredible that 'The Craftsman's (and he was) last bout was 15 years ago. Yeah man, long time ago now.
I know where you're from, so who did you box for? Denaby? I boxed at the Plant ABA in my teens for a bit but never got beyond training for a couple of years.

Re: Boxers who show promise and then suddenly dont box again?
I trained at Elmfield House and then Prince of Wales for Mick Preston, did a little at the Plant for Ken blood and then at Tadcaster Arms with John Rushton. Sparred all the lads and had a couple of exhibition bouts for John.

Good call on Chris Burton, where did he go?
Re: Boxers who show promise and then suddenly dont box again?
When i saw the name of the post my first thought was Craig Dermody saw him on a Phil Martin show & he was absolutely superb.
I read an interview with Danny Reynolds recently & I might be wrong but sure he said that he is waiting for his contract to run out.

Re: Boxers who show promise and then suddenly dont box again?
Danny Reynolds is a tough lad and seems like he can box a bit if he needed to; he's the wrong side of 25 if he's to while a contract away though. You have to make hay while the sun shines; hope he's the sort that keeps himself in good nick between fights.

I'm pretty sure Harley won it but his nose ruled him out and the lovely Gallagher went on to win the ABA title with a win over Billy Schwer.simon fox wrote:Martin Harley was a very good amateur; I don't think he ever turned professional. He pushed 'Blue Boy' Gallagher close but got his nose busted badly. The ref said he'd never seen a nose bleed like it. Harley didn't complain at all; he must've been a very tough lad.
Guy Wild was a top class amateur who didn't box professionally; he would've done well.
Re: Boxers who show promise and then suddenly dont box again?
Speaking of Billy Schwer - what happened to David Tetteh who beat him in the mid nighties.... out strengthed him. He stopped boxing in 2000 aged 29.

Yes Harley beat blueboy but had to withdraw due to his busted nose...bennie wrote:I'm pretty sure Harley won it but his nose ruled him out and the lovely Gallagher went on to win the ABA title with a win over Billy Schwer.simon fox wrote:Martin Harley was a very good amateur; I don't think he ever turned professional. I vaguely remember him going on to have a brace of fights with Canadian Billy Irwin but not much after that.
Re: Boxers who show promise and then suddenly dont box again?
What happened to Sultan Ibrigimov??
was unbeaten before going in with Wlad Klitschko in 2008 (I was actually there to witness the most boring fight in History) now havent heard any thing from him since.

Thats a good shout , although i did try to recruit dawson to box white collar for my promotion earlier this year and he told me he intends to return to the sport soon so decided against the white collar game .Ben Carey wrote: Neil Dawson, Rotherham cruiser, trained by Chris Aston, who was being eyemarked to take on Francis in a local derby. Both were unbeaten.

What was the story behind Lester Jacobs, he was 29-0 when he retired.
Looking at his record its just journeymen on it.

Lester could sell a few tickets and put on his own shows to get some wins. Claiming the WBF trinket was prob around the limit to his talent, he didn't want to venture into genuine title class having to go to someones backyard and risk losing his 0
