Khan v Pacquiao sparring updates

Post by ALI »

Khan, i believe, is currently in the Phillipines to do some sparring with Pacquiao. One report i read had them down to start their sparring at the weekend just gone.

Does anyone have any news if they have actually started sparring yet, and of course, how its going?

The only news is that prospect Glen Tapia has been beating up Pacquiao and Roach is not happy at all. Especially with all of the congress meetings he is doing. Like one every other day.

Margarito absolutely ruined Cotto, almost certainly fighting with illegal hand wraps. Is anyone naive to believe that he only did it for the Mosley fight. He and his trainer should have been banned for life in my opinion.

Mosley didn't test positive for his fight with Margarito - and PED's isn't the same as having plaster in your hand wraps.

I hope Pacquaio destroys Margarito and finishes his career, he's a disgrace to boxing.

The cynical side of me would think it might be a ploy to coax Mayweather out of the trees, but then Pacquiao's true form would be there for all to see against Marge.

God help Mayweather if Margarito wins. No possible redemption, Margarito - avoided, Cotto - avoided, Pacquiao - avoided.

Margarito is so much bigger than Pac, I wouldn't be too surprised to see him upset the apple cart, more so if Pac aint paying attention. Or is Margarito a spent force...not sure.

I agree that Marg is a disgrace to boxing, but from being a massive PacMan fan, ever since he went over and shocked everyone by beating that African guy, who was meant to be the next big thing, I can't help doubting him these days - no proof I know, but it just seems off, that he wont take the tests to prove himself to the world. He's often described as superhuman, and I just wish he'd take the test that would lay it all to rest, and prove he is.

Pac Man apparently staggers old Khan quite a lot in sparring, according to Doug Fischer.

From what i understand they only sparred on a few occassions just before Khan fought Prescott and have not sparred since then. Khan apparently did quite well during those sessions from what i can recal. He's come on a lot since then so i'm curious to see if he can give the PacMan a run for his money.

I would'nt give him much hope in a real fight with the PacMan, i think he's to chinny and would be KO'd, but in sparring where the idea is not to KO your oponent but to work on skills and conditioning, using heavier gloves and headgear, Khan could do well against the PacMan. Hopefully we'll get some solid reports comming out soon.

Yeah but how can you be so certain that Margarito wore hand wraps against Cotto?!It could of genuinely been a one-off against Mosley because he didnt fancy chances much in the fight and plus mosley has a very solid chin!Im not saying its right what he did but i dont think you can say he wore them in any other fight than the mosey fight if he had gottten away with it!Also people forget the punishment he absorbed in that fight against cotto,so for one you dont know that he did wear hand wraps in that fight and secondly you're forgetting the contribution he made himself in that fight of absorbing god knows how many head shots to coming back and winning the fight! Also saying that PED'Ss arent as bad as plaster in your handwraps is a naive statement! They're banned for a reason ie they improve stamina, strength and possibly even punching power! Also If you look at HGH that actually thickens your bones and theres been studies to show that it can thicken peoples jaws and thus give them the ability to absorb a shot better!

Add Kostya Tszyu and a prime Shane Mosley to that list. I was a big, HUGE Mayweather fan- I still am- his skillset is superb- but when you have a potential fight that could make both fighters ATG Superstars and he avoids it- it makes me very disatisfied. And the fact he was nearly spaked by Mosley and then launches another micro retirement gives me little hope that he will ever have the desire to seal his legacy against pacman.

I wrote the fight off about 12 months ago- if i'm proved right i'll be massively dissapointed.

Agreed Mosley showed the way to beat Margarito and Pacquiao will use a similiar gameplan, in and out with fast combo's not letting Marg get set, I see this being as one sided as the Mosley fight without the finish. A landslide UD for Pac for me

add in the lefty factor.

margo hates fighting left handers at the best of times.

wouldn't even rule out ryan rhodes giving him some big issues with southpaw boxing.

let alone someone as good as the pacman. :o

he's not had any decent prep for this one either.

been out since the mosley glove debacle.

I don't know if it's still offered, but Freddie Roach used to say that anyone who could knock Pacquiao down would get a cash reward (something like $1,000, I can't remember the figure).

Whilst I agree Mosley showed the way to beat Margo I can't see Pac doing the same thing. SSM shut Margs's attack down with adroit clinching & nasty bodypunching. Margs simply did not know what to when Mosley did this, the bodyshots took his legs & Mosley was so strong inside that Margs couldn't just throw him around (like he did with Cotto).

Pacquiao lacks the physical presence of Mosley, the sheer strength & will have to utilise some sort of hyper-active in & out high-punch volume version of the Clottey strategy. I will be bloody impressed if Pac can beat him; everyone that I can remember beating Margarito in top class was either insanely strong (SSM) or a similar weight-draining giant who could match him for sheer bulk & strength (Paul Williams & Daniel Santos, another six-foot southpaw). Whenever Margarito fights someone nearly as strong as him, he looks awful. When he is the stronger guy, he looks like the Terminator.

In short, am intrigued.

I agree that Margarito is a disgrace who should have been banned for life. I think Pacquiao hammers him and stops him late.

I also think that Mosley's cheating was a disgrace and have never had the same respect for him since.

All I know is that it is far far far easier to disguise the use of PED than it is to box wearing illegal hand wraps. Marg got CAUGHT before the land any punches vs Mosley - that's quite significant for me. There are checks in place for such things. I do honest believe it was only the SSM fight that Margarito attempted to cheat.

Although for even contimplating doing that Marg deserves a lifetime ban from the sport - so does anyone caught doing PED (unless it is consistent with medical receipts for over the counter treatments and geniune naivity).

Cheating has in the past, and could do again result in the opponent losing his life..... Margarito deserves jail time for what he did.... so for that matter does SSM.

Mayweather would of beaten Tszyu and as for a prime mosley it is true he ducked him but at the same time mosley was supposed to of ducked mayweather at an earlier time!Anyway Regarding Pacquaio i think that fight will definietly happen but only if pacquaio is willing to take the blood tests and if he has nothing to hide then there shouldnt be an issue! Also i remember bob arum saying Pacquaio wouldnt take the tests because he's scared of needles but then you look at the guy and he's got a fair few tattoo's!That comment in itself made me suspicious!

The only reason that Margarito was caught is because Mosley's trainer went to examine the hand wraps, and examine them closely.

Why would he not have done so for Cotto, given that Cotto was considered his biggest test to date?

I think Pacman is going to give Margo a 12 round beating. Margo may end up quitting, but like Clottey he's a big bugger, and not sure Pacman's punches will be effective against such a big guy.

Mosley hits like a train, and is a very big specimen, and also had the psychological advantage of the hand wrap fiasco.

Lefty, anyone who knows the story of Billy Collins would not have such a laissez faire attitude towards Margarito. I agree he should have been banned for life, and I say that as someone who used to be a huge fan.
And out of interest, what on earth does the amount of punishment Margarito absorbed in that fight have to do with any of this? :o
