Best conditioning/cardio ever?
Best conditioning/cardio ever?
Who had the best conditioning/cardio of all time? In other words, who was that one boxer who was fighting the championship rounds like it was round one or two?

Re: Best conditioning/cardio ever?
Yeah I was going to talk about Salvador, but I know some of you know he's my favorite, so you guys might of thought I was being biased. Guy looked like a first round fighter every time I saw him. He looked especially good vs. Nelson in round 15.
Re: Best conditioning/cardio ever?
Henry Armstrong supposedly had a heart rate of 27 bpm and Jersey Joe Walcott 45 bpm.
Re: Best conditioning/cardio ever?
In the last 10 years Joe Calzaghe stands out for me along with the Pac Man and JMM.
Calzaghe showed a great ticker in his battles with Brewer, Woodhall, Lacey and Hopkins.

I can believe 45 beats PM but not 27! That's too slow, surely?J-C wrote:Henry Armstrong supposedly had a heart rate of 27 bpm and Jersey Joe Walcott 45 bpm.
Re: Best conditioning/cardio ever?
It's not inconceivable, cyclist Miguel Indurain supposedly had a heart rate in the mid 20's. I have seen many cross country skiers in the low 30's. It would be highly uncommon for a boxer to be that low but not physically impossible.Rocky Balboa wrote:I can believe 45 beats PM but not 27! Re: Best conditioning/cardio ever?
At his death they did an autopsy and found he had an abnormally large heart, and he also said himself that his heartrate was much lower than normal and it took him a long time to warm up.hhaehre wrote:It's not inconceivable, cyclist Miguel Indurain supposedly had a heart rate in the mid 20's. The same is true for Indurain I believe, autopsy confirmed this? He also had abnormally large lungs, which displaced his stomach.

Re: Best conditioning/cardio ever?
Armstrong was indeed a confirmed freak --- a true oddity. Among the less-blessed, Sanchez is a terrific shout. More recently, Pacquiao has proven pretty phenomenal in this regard.
Anyone remember that shoot where they took the rested & elevated heart rates for De La Hoya & Trinidad, shortly before their fight? They took De La Hoya's, & the recovery was much as expected. Trinidad's, though, just blew it away. Shot right back down to resting in no time at all. If ever De La Hoya had a look of intimidation on his face in all his courageous career, you could see it then & there, when they showed just how well-conditioned Trinidad was.

Daniel Ponce De Leon deserves a shout. The man throws tons of loaded punches and never looks tired. Celestino Caballero looks to have great stamina as well because he's so calm. Floyd Mayweather doesn't seem to slow down much.
Re: Best conditioning/cardio ever?
Back in the 80s British Jr Welter Terry Marsh was supposed to have some amazing pulse rate. Not sure of the numbers exactly though.

In recent times, it's Joe Calzaghe - his stamina was phenomenal. He would still be throwing clusters of punches in the last round with not let up whatsoever.
All-time, it has to be Henry Armstrong - he was a cyborg with unbelievable stamina.
Honourable mention to Rocky Marciano.

You know your conditioning had to have been bad-ass when Joe Frazier aspires to emulate youSyntax Error wrote:In recent times, it's Joe Calzaghe - his stamina was phenomenal. He would still be throwing clusters of punches in the last round with not let up whatsoever.

Re: Best conditioning/cardio ever?
Felix Trinidad had a great pair of lungs in the modern age.
Re: Best conditioning/cardio ever?
Armstrong was found to have an abnomrally enlarged heart, which is what he had such endurance and a low resting pulse. It was said he would have a pretty hefty warm up for 15 rounds or so before even stepping out of the changing rooms.
Re: Best conditioning/cardio ever?
I know he's not the greatest fighter any of us have ever seen, but I'd like to send a shout out for Manuel Medina, threw like 1400 something punches against Tapia back in 2002 and looked like he could go another 12. That's pretty impressive.
Re: Best conditioning/cardio ever?
Ricky Hatton had amazing stamina, as does Margarito. I am wondering from observing people`s thoughts on Pac-man`s and Mayweather`s great stamina, is there somewhere, a detailed description as to what they do on a daily basis in the gym? Especially Pac-man because he is an offensive minded fighter. If not, is there any other fighters who have a tough training regiment that have detailed there workouts?

Yes he was always going to be mentioned sooner or later. But dam, that guy was a battering ram who just kept comin and comin' and comin'.Syntax Error wrote:Honourable mention to Rocky Marciano.

Not a single mention of Harry Greb ?
In more recent times. Michael Spinks, Julio Cesar Chavez and Barry McGuigan deserve mention.
