duran was overrated
Re: duran was overrated
I think the big question regarding Duran v Monzon wouldn't be whether he could make it to the final bell, but rather would he want to. Hagler fought a poor tactical fight for about the first 5 rds and that gave Duran alot of momentum, but what happens to Duran psychologically if after say 8rds with Monzon, he hasen't really been hurt, but he's still trailing 8-0 or 7-1 ?
Re: duran was overrated
Monzon wouldn't do much for the first few rounds. He just liked to make his mental photographs and begin the puzzle.
Monzon, like Hagler, also liked his opponent to come to him. Hagler struggled with everyone who made him make the fight - which is what Duran did. Monzon was better than Hagler at sitting back so I don't think he'd have as much trouble with Duran but I still think he'd find it harder than expected.

Re: duran was overrated
I think what happened between Hagler & Dran had more to do with Hagler, myself. He showed Duran too much respect --- far too much, in point of fact. Not saying he should've gone hell-for-leather, but he should've done a whole lot better, in truth. I'm actually a little surprised this fight isn't ever brought up in an effort to embarrass Hagler. It should be from his detractors.

Re: duran was overrated
He was intimidated by Duran. With hagler's long career, that was his first super fight and he froze a bit and I totally agree that he gave Duran too much respect. I don't think the fight was as close as the judges had it. Duran was out of shape and winded pretty early on, he might have been able to stop him.
I agree that Monzon would pose more of a problem with his longer dimensions and he definitely wouldn't be intimidated. I don't see him stopping Duran though. Roberto's right hand would land frequently against anyone pressing the issue. Monzon would take a wide decision imo, Duran never threatening to win or be stopped.

Re: duran was overrated
A fiight of the great Roberto Duran fight with the great Carlos Monzon at middleweight would be a massacre. Probably worst than what happened to Jose "Mantequilla" Napoles. Especially with a Duran out of his prime in a weight class TOO BIG FOR HIM!

Duran would've wrecked Monzon. Duran killed a bull with one shot, and last time I checked the only fighter capable of wrecking wild animals was Mike Tyson KOing Silverbacks.
Duran KO1

Duran KO1
From the, "Going Straight To Hell" jokebook...
Put a dress on Duran, & Monzon will turn into a killer
Re: duran was overrated
DURAN Overated....HHMMM!
Even to suggest that makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.
Just a couple of thoughts about Roberto Duran's skills.
1. Has the best defensive skills....ability to slip punches..without running around the ring
like Leonard, Ali etc
2. Best counter puncher without a doubt in boxing history.
3. Knock Out puncher
4. Ability to take a punch
5. Did not cut or swell up.
6. Durans record and titles.
W 103 L 16 KO's 70
Duran has more KO's than Leonard had wins
Even to suggest that makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

1. Has the best defensive skills....ability to slip punches..without running around the ring
like Leonard, Ali etc (I would say his defensive ability is often under-rated and one of the best)
2. Best counter puncher without a doubt in boxing history. –( I would say one of the best for sure.)
3. Knock Out puncher (mostly at lightweight, he did not carry the same punching power at welter or above)
4. Ability to take a punch (See vs Thomas Hearns)
5. Did not cut or swell up. (agree)
6. Durans record and titles. (Wins against Leonard, Buchanan, De Jesus, Palomino, Cuevas, Barkley, and Moore. He lost to Leonard 2x, Hearns, Benitez, and Hagler)
I would say he has a share of notable losses on his record too.
W 103 L 16 KO's 70
Duran has more KO's than Leonard had wins - (So did Jim McVey 42W (38K), 29L (15 by KO)) So what does that proves?

Re: duran was overrated
I'm not the world's biggest Duran fan. But if you're going to rate him, you look at his career up to the second Leonard fight.
After that he was past his best.

You point about Hearns knocking him out is idiotic, that would have floored anyone in the same weight class.Idisagree wrote:Just a couple of thoughts about Roberto Duran's skills.RAPID1 wrote:DURAN Overated....HHMMM!

^^^In your opinion (the first point). Statements from Keith & I are statements of fact.
Re: duran was overrated
No, they are opinion also. The result of a fight had a fighter prepared differently isn't fact.
Re: duran was overrated
he got paid before the fight & his training camp consisted of partying spending the money. he was fuked at the weight.no rematch as they went seperate way's with hearn's getting fuked by hagler & the blade could they fuk duran....keithmoonhangover wrote:.......he still would have got knocked out by Hearns.hurlock wrote:duran had great tenacity, he had natural stamina which was charged from sheer spite. the man loved steak, champagne, pussy & coke no doubt & would still enter the ring small & fat to fuk people up. the man is a great & had he been more proffesional.....

This thread is turning into a running sore for the forum...
Re: duran was overrated
how anyone can call a 3weight world champion over rated is beyond me.
Re: duran was overrated
agreed....other than the fact that folks like Ali and Duran are just so iconic that they almost can't help but be over rated. They are certainly not "under rated".

It's no longer a fact that Hearns decapitated Duran, & Benitez schooled him? Duran's preparation has sweet jack fvcking sh!t to do with what Keith & I said.
