What are your favorite Fenech fights?

Post by Joe Boxer »

After watching and learning from his Title Instructional Videos, I've recently become a big fan of Jeff Fenech. I've looked-up his fights on youtube, and I want more!

A guy I met at a boxing show sent me a list, and told me he'd make a video/DVD of the fights I want. I want them ALL :DDD , but I don't want to be pushy.

What are your top three Fenech fights?

Here's the list of fights that are available:

Fenech.jeff vs g.richrdson (WBC SB)
vs s.payakaroon ( " )
vs v.callejas (WBC Fe)
vs m.villasana ( " )vs
vs t.downs ( " )
vs j.navarro ( " )
vs singaki.satoshi (I) (IBF B)
vs singaki.satoshi(II) ( " )
vs s.mcCrory ( " )
vs j.coffe ( " )
vs c.zarate (WBC SB)
vs A.Nelson(I) (WBC SFe)
vs (II) ( " )
vs P.Holyday (IBF L)

Which ones would you recommend?

He really boxed superbly against Nelson the 1st time but got slightly showing up in their rematch. I would say Nelson I was his best performance

Steve McCrory was a good fight because he was the Olympic gold medalist that Fenech got robbed of getting a shot at .
This was a good fight because Fenech forced the boxer to fight him and we all know the result.

Although the Mauler's bout against Samart Payakaroon only lasted 4 rounds, it shows just how aggressive and dynamic young Jeff was in those days.

Samart came over with big tickets on himself and left beaten and battered. In fact the shame of his defeat was so much to him and his countrymen that he retreated into a Buddist temple to seek solace for 12 months.

All of Fenech s fights were fantastic andgreat to watch except the last couple after the judges broke his heart and will in America with the bullshit draw against Nelson.
Fenech fought and beat the best fighters around, he took on the hardest toughest champion in the division when he fought Nelson.

Fenech is our greatest boxer ever from Australia and I doubt we will ever see another like him.

My favourite three would be Payakaroon, Callejas & Nelson I. Obviously he was never the same after Nelson I, but he was good to watch from the start as hes progression was amazing, loved the way he stalked his opponent and cut off the ring. Pretty sure he was Rings #3 Pound for Pound at one stage.

Fenech has also been considered by most boxing experts to be a top 10 Featherweight alltime. Yet he's ranked at 54 by boxrec.....unbelievable.

dispite fighting all the great champions, tell me which other champion done it with broken hands. in the late 80s they rated all the world champions in the world boxing mag and Fenechdispite coming 3rd was the only fighter who greated 3 perfect 10s for offense, chin, and in fighting. had they not given him a low mark for defence and cuts, he would of have been rated no1. he rated in front of Holyfield, Nelson and Ray leonard.....Not to bad for an Ozzie alot of people like to bag!!

I am trying to find some of Fenechs rare fights. I don't know if they were televised though. I'm after his early fights vs Percy Israel, lliesa Manila, Wayne Mulholland, Rolando Navarro and Kenny Butts. I have 29 of his 34 fights. Any help will be much appreciated.

Fenech's hands troubled him throughout his career and from memory he damaged or broke bones in them a number of times.

As far as favourite Fenech fights go, there were so many good ones it is hard to separate one from the bunch. Probably his best performance was in his first meeting with Azumah Nelson - even though he didn't get the decision.

Fenech's hands troubled him constantly during his career. They were regularly swollen to the point they were almost round and he was always in search of wonder cures in an attempt to have them healed.

Fenech did specifically brake his right hand during training for the Victor Callejas fight.
