O'Kane and Gallagher to turn pro tomorrow - you listening Barry!?
I was wondering how many more of the home-nations fighters will turn pro after these games.
It's a tough decision to make for the ones in their mid-20s. The prospect of winning Olympic gold on home soil in a couple of years is probably toying with their heads.
Well the thing is that NI is only 6 of the 32 counties of Ireland, granted two of the top 5 counties in Ireland are in the 6 NI counties but still many of them wont get in the Ireland team for the Olympics.
Whilst the Commonwealth gold will aid their funding status and it would be great experience and training before you go pro, they wont make the Ireland team for qualifiers.
Time is ticking on for O'Kane so he should turn before Christmas in my opinion and Gallagher, although young, is a crude, strong, rough-houser (Smith threw the gold away letting Gal fight his fight) and a probably wont get in the Irish team, he isnt in the High Performance team now, so probably should follow the dollar.
Little Red and McCarthy will hold on and Steven Ward is very inexperienced and has plenty of time to develop so no point in them turning.
Fighter of the tournament in my opinion is wild young Paddy Gal, I didn't give him much of a chance of getting past the first round, but he displayed a cracking "couldntgiveafúck" attitude in every fight and came out on top. Brilliant effort - kudos to you you young rapscallion!
