Isn't Prizefighter Just.....
..... the "People's Choice One-Night Heavyweight Tournament" in disguise?
Anyone else remember that?
There is talk of them selling the prizefighter structure abroad. I feel a lawsuit coming on.

Yes, I remember that, and also Cedric Kushner did it with his Thunderbox fighters.keithmoonhangover wrote:..... the "People's Choice One-Night Heavyweight Tournament" in disguise?

However there's no copyright on ideas and thus no reason to stop anybody doing similar, so long as they don't also call it Prizefighter.
You could even argue it's been "copied" from other sports, as K1, muay Thai and wrestling have all had one-night "bracket" tournaments.

Re: Isn't Prizefighter Just.....
I remember some years back a promoter had more or less the same idea as Prizefighter long before Barry Hearn started his with almost an identical format and it was for heavyweights and was going to be staged in Australia. There was a really good line up, people like Mcline,Byrd,Toney (they weren't anywhere near shot at this point) and some other good names that I can't remember had signed up. The money was really good too as I recall. Unfortunatly the finances weren't in place and it fell through. So Barry isn't the only promoter that had the idea, he's just had the nouse to do it properly and to its credit it now leads on to something meaningful.

Barry Hearn readily admits that he modelled the concept of the Prizefighter tournament on 20-20 cricketoliverfennell wrote: You could even argue it's been "copied" from other sports, as K1, muay Thai and wrestling have all had one-night "bracket" tournaments.

Really? Some of the dudes competing should be allowed to carry cricket bats into the ring then.
It will surely improve it as a spectacle from what we watched t'other night...

I think this happened before 20/20
The People's Choice One Night Heavyweight Tournament was a heavyweight elimination tournament held in Bay St. Louis on December 3, 1993. The contest attempted to bring together many of the top boxers in the division together for an elimination tournament of three-round bouts, but instead it attracted former contenders and journeyman fighters. Former heavyweight champion Tony "TNT" Tubbs won the $1 million prize.
The format laid the groundwork for future elimination tournaments such as the Thunderbox Heavyweight Tournament and the forthcoming Superfighter tournament.
The Results were (All bouts 3 rounds)
First Round:
James 'Bonecrusher' Smith W Pts Lester Jackson
Marshall Tillman W Pts Jason Williams
Tony Tubbs W Pts Willie Jackson
Tyrell Biggs W Pts Evgueni Sudakov
Shane Sutcliffe W DQ3 Paul Phillips
Tyrell Biggs W TKO2 Shane Sutcliffe
Quarter-Final:
Daniel Dancuta W TKO3 Derrick Roddy
James 'Bonecrusher' Smith W Pts Marshall Tillman
Jose Ribalta W Pts Derek Williams
Tony Tubbs W Pts Tyrell Biggs
Semi-Final:
Tony Tubbs W Pts Jose Ribalta
Daniel Dancuta W Pts James 'Bonecrusher' Smith
Final:
Tony Tubbs W Pts Daniel Dancuta
Tubbs wins $1,000,000

Re: Isn't Prizefighter Just.....
The last Prizefighter (that Sprott won) was a pile of rubbish IMO. The novelty has worn off for me and maybe it's time to get back to the real thing. If and when the sport needs a shot in the arm, perhaps it could be rolled out again, but the last show was agonisingly bad.

Re: Isn't Prizefighter Just.....
I think Barry Hearn needs to start bringing in new blood - heavyweights from the states who will fight to the last drop for 50,000 dollars. I suggested an Ashes series of heavyweight prizefighter - invite Leapai, Cronje, DeMori and Whitehead over to fight Skelton, Rogan, Sexton and Sprott and you have a prizefighter worth watching!THEBUTCH wrote:The last Prizefighter (that Sprott won) was a pile of rubbish IMO. Sounds good to me. I would like to see a prizefighter with all the fighters making thier debut.Carlos-Wigan wrote:I think Barry Hearn needs to start bringing in new blood - heavyweights from the states who will fight to the last drop for 50,000 dollars. They had something like that over in the maritime provinces in Canada and they called it 'The Next Great Heavyweight'

But Supe bantam weights was good so will super feather!Carlos-Wigan wrote:I think Barry Hearn needs to start bringing in new blood - heavyweights from the states who will fight to the last drop for 50,000 dollars. Re: Isn't Prizefighter Just.....
i'd like to see a slight change to the current format
3rds for the qtr's
4rd's semi's
5rd's in the final.
as the business end comes in, you get a longer fight to showcase the qualities of the fighters progressed, and also reward them fighters witha couple of extra rounds exposure. 3 rounds can get a bit to scrappy

Re: Isn't Prizefighter Just.....
It was a farce......tubbs ended up with about $50,000, Derek was the only english guy on the bill, there was a joe savage, but he bottled it after watching some sparring... I had the TV master tapes, I gave them to Barry when he was thinking of doing prizefighter, still aint got them back either!!, must call him.keithmoonhangover wrote:I think this happened before 20/20

yes I remember Joe Savage, the so-called English bare knuckle champion. He did bottle it then, but let's not forget he tehn proceeded to have his first boxing match (amatrur or pro) against Bert Cooper, who predictably smoked him in a round...ERIC GUY wrote:It was a farce......tubbs ended up with about $50,000, Derek was the only english guy on the bill, there was a joe savage, but he bottled it after watching some sparring...
