Eastside boxing
Re: Eastside boxing
I think it's a laugh of a forum to be honest(especially the lounge section) as their is an unbelievable mixture of personalities ranging from the sublime to the downright ridiculous.
There is a bit of snobbery when it comes to BoxRec though, our current scene is no different to their general forum, full of idiots and fanboys most likely kids who are yet to have sex with a woman.
The rest of BoxRec forums however are way better than ESB.

Yes, you're right there on all counts. I visit ESB British more than I do the Current Scene here.banjo wrote:I think it's a laugh of a forum to be honest(especially the lounge section) as their is an unbelievable mixture of personalities ranging from the sublime to the downright ridiculous.

The ESB Lounge is, at times, very, very funny.

There are some very good posters over there (though not legion in number) and the site does unearth the occasional nugget to make it worthwhile.
I visit a few times a week but don't stay there for very long.
BoxRec News' reach is quite wide. Someone logged on from the Northern Mariana Islands recently. Never heard of 'em
In our four months we've had 85 countries, including the Solomon and Caymen Islands - although 87% of hits are from Ireland and Britain.
Re: Eastside boxing
very negative british forum whose posters (mostly) seem incapable of understanding how a british fighter can get to EBU level, and how a european level fighter can get to world level. full of posters who know what x fighter "needs to do" without offering anything even remotely constructive. as others have said, you have to question whether these ppl even like boxing, or why they even bother posting.
i mostly go on there for the "mighty adamek express" thread on the general forum, as it often has rumours on where my fave fighter's career is headed next. and also to see the latest european rumours. the european forum is good, but sadly it is very inactive and good threads die after about a day or two. but i do find if you have a query - how do i get hold of this or that fight, what was so and so vs whatshisname like - then i get at least one response.
their general forum isn't worth wasting time on.

I take it they have been giving John Murray (Autobarns most favourite person in the whole wide world) an online beating about his abilities?Autobarn wrote:very negative british forum whose posters (mostly) seem incapable of understanding how a british fighter can get to EBU level, and how a european level fighter can get to world level. full of posters who know what x fighter "needs to do" without offering anything even remotely constructive. as others have said, you have to question whether these ppl even like boxing, or why they even bother posting.
You go on about him a lot Autobarn but I think he has to win Wimbledon first before your talk about him is justified!
Re: Eastside boxing
they're like it with everyone. murray, munroe currently, and plenty of other fighters before them like froch (who got to the world scene).
like i say, i mainly use the forum for european boxing. looking for information on sosnowki v dimitrenko, adamek's training, and fishing for information on good european fights/lost classics etc. ESB seem to have more european posters than us.

Re: Eastside boxing
I agree with that, they have a lot of European posters but that was the reason for Eastside's existence anyway, because Eastern Europeans weren't getting the coverage that the sites creators thought they should. And the European forums are pretty good it has to be said as is their Australian forum.Autobarn wrote:they're like it with everyone. murray, munroe currently, and plenty of other fighters before them like froch (who got to the world scene).

i have to credit ESB for drawing my attention to that crazy ozzie heavyweight brawl, alex leapai v travis walker.
Re: Eastside boxing
And I refuse to post the link for reasons of decency but if it wasn't for ESB five minutes ago, I would never have known that 'Brazilian fart porn' existed.
Right, I'm definitely shutting this PC down now.

i remember when jon thaxton had "completely leveled out" only to win the european title in his next fight or two. that's the kind of thing that pisses me off.

Re: Eastside boxing
Some interesting comments, fellas.
Speaking as someone who posts regularly on the ESB forum, I think a lot of the comments in this thread are generally unfair towards the genuine boxing fans who post on ESB. Yes, there are a fair few trolls, 'haters', those who fabricate stories for their own amusement and, it has to be said, complete idiots who use the site, but this shouldn't blind you from the swathes of vastly knowledgable posters (of which I am not one), die-hard boxing fans and people who care about the sport as well. I know there is a general snobbery with regards to the 'standard' of the Boxrec forum, but I think ESB isn't too far behind in terms of quality of content; surely posting on one specific site doesn't make you a bigger or better fan than someone else who posts on another website? Additionally, surely there are some bad posters on this site as well?
I must admit, to someone not used to ESB, I can see why a lot of the childish comments would be a put-off, but as long as you can siphon through them (like any general nastiness in life) you will find a generally positive place with a public with good intentions. It really isn't hard to ignore the asinine comments and look for the ones worth reading, IMO. I do, however, completely admit that the ESB forum has really gone downhill in the last year or so.
Personally, I think anywhere where fans of a fringe sport can openly discuss and debate the sport they love can only be a good thing. In closing, I completely agree that the ESB 'articles' are terrible, but I think the good posters on the site deserve a bit more respect from their fellow Boxrec boxing fans.
Cheers.
Craig.

I agree that every Boxrec has a few poor posters, but the number is very, very low in comparison to ESB. The idiots that this forum attract, are usually vetted out before long.Losfer_Words wrote:Some interesting comments, fellas.

ESB does have some really intelligent lads who make fantastic posts, but it becomes a frustration when time and time again, you have to delve through horrible posts just to find someone who makes sense.
So yeah, both sites have their 'vermin', but the amount at ESB is astronomical in comparison.
Also, Craig, post a bit more.

It's like that here though at times, the amount of times we see a young prospect get the old "He'll be lucky if he reached European level him - maybe even British level" treatment when he's yet to hit double figures in bouts fought.Autobarn wrote:they're like it with everyone. murray, munroe currently, and plenty of other fighters before them like froch (who got to the world scene).
It's almost as if they've got to blast out their opponents in mid-80's era Tyson fashion to get any praise around here, although saying that if they did do that then it would be "another tomato can, another lamb to the slaughter" etc.

Re: Eastside boxing
as some of you will know, I am a regular poster on the Eastside British forum.
In terms of the actual "news stories" that are posted on the main site, I have to agree. they are shocking, and as bad as boxing news 24. In general I ignore the main page.
Theres allot of negatives about Eastside. The general forum is shocking, and you can get banned for silly reasons. I got a ban last month when I made a thread about various boxing podcasts and radio shows. The intention was to spread the word as theres not much boxing in the main stream media. Allot of people will enjoy shows like Main Event, Bunce Hour, On the Grind, Boxing Truth. it turned out esb has an "official" and they thought I was advertising against there show. was a bit of a joke.
ESB British forums seems to have more traffic than the boxrec british, and esb is has more in terms of gossip and live round by rounds. Ian you seem to disagree about traffic but I think theres far more posts and replies on eastside each day. your more likely to read about a potential fight, or a news story from a us site will get posted. and thats why I prefer eastside to boxrec. also i prefer the layout of eastside, things like the colour and it annoys me on boxrec when you get the multiple quotes?? just don't like that.
in terms of intelligent boxing debate, no doubt boxrec is the place to be. but not everybody wants that. some of your comments in this thread have been snobbish. this forum is not superior to eastside, its just different. theres negatives and positives about both.
in response to Paul Smith I think you just show a failure to understand that you are a public figure and you will get criticised, and the more high profile you get the worse it will be. it may not be fair but there must be allot of positives about you job that can help you live with the stick you sometimes get. i have often seen yourself and other fighters use the line "you don't understand what goes on behind the scenes" and my response to that is......why not try and explain to us? Some of the criticism from myself and others may be unfair, but if you sign to defend your british title against a fighter in nobodies top 10 (paul david) do you really expect anything less? also i seem to remember when Carl Dilks came on here you were the first to go over board and slag him off???
Larry O - i have honestly never seen you criticised on eastside. if i did i would stick up for you as i love the way you conduct yourself.
Ed Robinson. What do you expect us to think of Sky as boxing fans. We pay £30 for Sky Sports like all other sports fans but when theres a big fight its a PPV, and 9/10 with a poor undercard. Is the FA cup final a ppv on sky? is the us open tennis or ryder cup???. so why should big boxing matches be on there? we have gone 7 years without a magazine show dedicated to boxing, the number of high profile US boxing matches not shown by Sky in the last 3 years is crazy. Why can sky not have a contract with Goldenboy or Top Rank like setanta have??? all these things make no sense to boxing fans. and all we really want is an explanation. If Mick Hennesey is asking for stupid money for Carl Froch vs Arthur Abraham, why not tell us?
with regards to the Maloney bashing here is why it happens.http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_ ... &cat=boxer

British forum is generally very good with some informed posters. You do have to siphon through the jokers however. Classic forum is superb. The level of knowledge there is easily the best I've found on the net. How often do you get a post starting with lines like " I was having a drink with Willie Pep one day..." Posters like John Garfield,McGrain and Lora.
I never read the articles for obvious reasons and the general forum is an a abortion of a site that should be shut down. I mean how many Floyd/Pac threads do we really need? And there's one Pavlik fan there whose shit has to be seen to be believed.

Re: Eastside boxing
ESB has it's negatives, just like any other forum. It's true that the British forum is sometimes overrun with posters whose sole intention is to 'troll'. And I myself sense quite a bit of negativity on quite a few occasions. Personally, I try and keep positive (I was one of the very few sticking up for Maloney!
), but I can understand why people get upset over aspects in the sport. The Haye-Audley match-up is a recent example. I had my say, but some people feel the need to keep banging on about it when there really isn't any need to. Again, this is a factor as to why ESB might come across as a 'negative' site if you're just a casual browser of the forum. But, if you look beyond the inane threads and posts, you will find a lot of excellent discussions on the Brit forum of both the domestic and world scene.
I like both forums, and although I don't post on this one I usually have a look around daily

Re: Eastside boxing
I post both on here andon Eastside and find both have their own merits. I spend more time on ESB forum mainly because there is a quicker back and forth sometimes it seems like debates go on over a space of days rather than a few hours.
I think the British and Classic forums are very good like here there are a number of people closely connected to boxing and current pros or ex pros. As much as Paul Smith claims that ESB is a dump i would like to point out some of the baiting that goes on here towards him from a number of posters though to Pauls credit he is able to ignore it mostly.
I would say it is hard for a pro to post on eastside as they do come under an immediate torrent from so many posters and inevitibily a fair bit will be negative. Both have their merits and long may they continue!

Re: Eastside boxing
I don't see what's wrong with criticising people - whether it be boxers, promoters or Sky, so long as it is done so constructively and with good reason.
I'm probably the biggest Frank Maloney critic on ESB, because I feel that his work in the past couple of years has been very average, take away Booth and Munroe and there isn't a lot else, barring mismatches and crying about debatable decisions. For all the sh1t Warren gets his work in the past 12 months has been easily superior.
As for criticising boxers, it depends on their attitude. Someone like Bellew openly encourages people to say what they think, and doesn't respond with the ''you wouldn't dare say it to my face'' tripe, or ''you've never boxed, so what do you know'' nonsense..... just because I (or anyone else) might not have boxed doesn't disqualify them from speaking their mind.
If someone wants to tell me that I know nothing about rugby I'll gladly listen, and probably just laugh when they try outdoing me.
On to Sky - I've also criticised them in the past 12 months, but will openly admit that their coverage has improved markedly. I'd also say that the aforementioned Ed Robinson is wasted in his current role and should be doing more - he's not afraid of asking the difficult questions and does come across as a very knowledgable bloke. There are improvements that could be made - they could force fights more (as HBO does), they could reject mismatches and insist that young lads are matched properly to earn their TV money. It's not re-inventing the wheel, is it?
Like ESB, this is a good forum, though it must be said that this one is moderated much better and the clowns are weeded out much quicker.
