Dempsey vs Marciano... who would win?...

Post by silkov »

Tough fight to call... I think Dempsey would have the edge in speed and Marciano the edge in strength... Marciano seems to have got busted up the more facially while Dempsey possibly had the weaker chin... all in all I think Rocky's extra strength would prevail and he would win a brutal thriller on points or by a late round ko... views anyone?... 8)

Dempsey-faster, more skilled, harder hitter, just as durable. Marciano gets edge in stamina but that´s it. I wouldn´t say Dempsey neccesarily has the weaker chin b-c Marciano never faced the calibre of punchers Jack did.

I believe Dempsey would cut Marciano by the 3rd or 4th round and win by TKO due to the cut in the late rounds. Marciano had more power than Dempsey, but he was just WAY too slow to handle him.

Similar to Tyson Tua. 2 Massive train wrecks with plenty of action and hammers thrown and landed.

I think Rockys bette rchin, better power and better stamina would have carreid him to a late victory, rounds 12-14. Ko.

The thing is it may have turned out the best strategy for Dempsey would actually have been to box, given his longer reach and better speed. If he did that he could have won a decision. But it may not have been possible for him to adjust his stile to boxing.

Why are people saying Marciano has more power? Look at Dempsey´s record . . more 1st round KOs of any HW champion . . he completly blew away guys twice his size. Watch him put Firpo down in agony with a body shot . . .the guy had outstanding punching strength. Rocky hit hard but he usually wore guys down over the stretch. Unless you were a real class fighter, Dempsey took you out early.

Or unless they belonged to the local fire department.

Iw would have been brutal.

I think Marciano would have won it.

After being decked and being helped back into the ring.....

Dempsey also fought in an era when you could stand over a fallen opponent and whack them out when they were getting up and defenceless.

I think Dempsey is probably the most overrated champion in history, his title reign was farcical, he defended it as and when he saw fit, fighting two bloody 10 rounders. A fantastic fighter in the broadest sense of the word, and a cult hero of his era, but nothing special in the pantheon of heavyweight champions.

He could probably have hurt Marciano, but he'd have a job finishing him off if he didn't he would have had to absorb a lot of punishment to prevail as Marciano got better as fights went on.

I like Dempsey early and Marciano late. Dempsey was a great fighter but like a lot of fighters back then his record when he won the title wasn't as impressive as before he won it. You can say the same for Johnson too. And yes Jack did stand above his opponents when they were down but today refs stop fights much earlier than they did in those days.

Put Dempsey in any era with the same diet, training and roids and he gives anyone a fight.
