Tammer Tournament

Post by Dennis »

Does anyone know why USA only had one boxer, Lenroy Thompson, compete in the tournament?

Yes the loin cloth shorts/skort is questionable. A lot of refs & tournaments wouldn't allow it.

Lenroy did box better at the PAL than I have ever seen him box before. He sat down on some punches which was a nice change.

Lenroy Thompson is probably the most active boxer in USA Boxing. USA didn't send Lenroy Thompson, the Turner Boxing Club sent Lenroy to the Tammer tournament. The Tammer tournament is an open invitation tournament for everyone in the world. Another boxer Srdan Lukic from Buffalo, New York also attended this tournament.

Champion, you seem rather bitter. The $5000 wasn’t for Lenroy, the $5000 was for the winner of the super heavyweight class. It was given by Michael King, who has multiple Super Heavyweight boxers and is generating more incentive for boxing in the Super Heavyweight class. Coincidently, Lenroy happened to win the PAL Tournament.

The trunks are not illegal. Trunks with panels and no shorts underneath are illegal. Lenroy's trunks are shorts with panels attached, which are legal to wear in competition.

PAL didn't supply Lenroy with his outfit until minutes before his bout in the finals. The top was too large for Lenroy to fight in and he was allowed to wear a black tank top.

So those points weren’t too valid there, Champ!

The announcement was made that the monies given were from an unnamed "benefactor" - there was speculation that it was John Brown. AFAIK, Michael King no longer has any ties to USA Boxing except for locally in the SoCal area (registered club, athletes and non-athletes).

Mel - Michael King is getting involved again. He has been flying superheavies out to his gym in SoCal for "training camps". He has the money to influence the sport. He wants to bring glory back to the professional HW division in the United States. I hope he succeeds. If he can get people interested in our sport, then the amateur game will grow and the numbers will increase. If he would have announced the $5K (and $1K for other weight divisions) ahead of time as part of the PAL fact sheet, the entry numbers would have been larger. If he wants to do it at the National GG and the U.S. Championships too, I'm all for it. Heck, I might come out of retirement, oh wait, I'm too old. DARN. All kidding aside, giving better awards (cash prizes) gets more interest in the sport. I'm all for it.

His premise has been to take athletes from other sports and turn them into HW's and SHW's. He provides those weight classes at the pro-am shows I work in Irvine and, with one exception, none of his HW/SHWs can box. Most of the aspiring athletes are just starting in their middle to late 20's and their lack of previous experience shows. He also brings competition from other states to participate in the pro am shows. Last one had trunks that were more fringe than not.

.

I am truly glad the announcement wasn't made. Administration couldn't handle the 500+ boxers it had.
If he wants to do it at the National GG and the U.S. Championships too, I'm all for it
.

I'm working another pro-am on the 28th. I'll inquire about his supposed monetary contribution at PAL.

Well Champion, since you are a "Champion" what have you done to criticize Thompson effect style? Are you a fighter who just never had "it" or a old bitter coach who attends these matches to complain and bash other fighters? You don't have to let us know who you are, but you should ask the closest person to you for a hug. You sound like an unhappy person. Everyone needs a hug sometimes. :-)

I suppose venting is okay if it helps rid you of your frustatations. I don't consider personal attacks as venting - just bad manners. I know, i know - there's mostly testosterone here. :DD

Hey Mel, some of us, like you and me for example, aren't afraid to be open about who we are rather than hide behind a screen name. Everyone can find out rather quickly who we are. Two other things we have in common, we typically don't make personal attacks on this forum unless it is against each other. :DD I like discourse about issues that help the sport.

Yep - I have no problem letting people know what I think And just to be nice....it was REALLY a pleasure meeting you and Jordan at the PAL. At least we got some time to chat. :TU:

Mel - it was a pleasure being able to finally talk to you in person. I am 7' when wearing rollerblades and I was almost 8' tall when I was riding the Segway in San Antonio (I had to watch out for signs, awnings, tree branches and other obstacles). In spite of the problems with the tourney, I had a good time and got to see a lot of good boxing people.
