A great british Heavyweight fight we were deprived of ........
I think Mason was powerful he banged equally hard to the kiester and down in the breadbasket. One of his toughest fights was the night he took on Olympic Gold Medalist Tyrell Biggs . Biggs was just removed from the Tyson and Damiani losses and seemed to have a career that was rapidly falling apart.Finkel and the Duvas were giving him hell. But he gave Gary a tough battle by staying on his toes somewhat at a distance before Gary landed one sweet hand hander and it was over.
I think Herbie would try and stay on the outside and box and counter too.
I see Gary ending it around the 8th round in a good entertaining fight.
Gary Mason v Herbie Hide

Nah, I would say that Hide would have it.

Re: Gary Mason v Herbie Hide
Whilst i can see Herbie winning the early rounds with his speed and movement, i think that Gary would be to strong and heavy handed for him. Very Similar to the Riddick Bowe fight for Hide im afraid, although he would last a little longer but the outcome would be the same. Mason wins by Ko in round 9.
One British Heavyweight of that era that i do think that Hide could have beat though was Horace Notice. This would have been a distance fight with Herbie outboxing him and winning by late TKO or on points.

Re: Gary Mason v Herbie Hide
The Hide of 1989-1990 called himself the Dancing Destroyer and with his 1960's flattop tried to make like Cassius Clay and Gary Mason was very bear like and hey he looked kinda like Sonny Liston
Re: Gary Mason v Herbie Hide
While Hide tried to box like Ali/Clay he was FAR from being Ali/Clay.
His chin was WAY too fragile and he really didn't like getting punched by heavyweights as,in reality, he was a Cruiser making more cash for himself and Barry Hearn by fighting at heavy. In his own words 'just the wind from a heavyweight punch could knock you over'
Hide did have power, good movement and as seen in the Bowe fight, lots of heart, but thats his lot I'm afraid.
Gary however, was a TRUE heavyweight who was ranked 4 in the world in a VERY tough division including Foreman, Tyson, Ruddock, Douglas and Holyfield.
Gary lost only 1 fight in 37 and that was to a future legend in Lennox Lewis. It lasted 7 rounds, 1 round longer than Vitali Klitschko managed, was close on points and was only stopped due to Mason's damaged eye which was already bad prefight. At no time did Gary look like going over either.
In realty, Herbie Hide would look good for 3-4 rounds, until Mason lands a half decent punch at which point Hide goes down, not once but probably 3-4 times before being stopped about round 7-8. He could hurt Gary, but very little chance of actually winning.
Only way Hide wins is on eye damage post Mason's retina damage.

Re: Gary Mason v Herbie Hide
I can't decide if Mason was over- or underrated. His record certainly flatters him, but that's not to say he wouldn't have enjoyed some success if let off the leash earlier. He's unlucky that his biggest and most memorable fight came against a future ATG, but as a point of reference as to how Mason was regarded at the time, a lot of people made him favourite vs Lewis.
Hide, on the other hand, was an exceptional talent. He had power beyond his size and the kind of speed that would trouble almost anybody. On his best night, he could truly look A-class. However the chin is every bit as important as any other part of a fighter's make-up, and in that regard Hide was terribly lacking. He really did have one of the worst chins I've ever seen. True, he was massively physically outgunned against the likes of Vitali and Bowe, but none of the shots that dropped him looked more than glancing blows.
With any Hide scenario, it's very difficult to get past his failings in the punch-resistance department. Almost every high-level fight you can imagine him in, that is what springs to mind. Same deal vs Mason - sooner or later, Mason would club him to the floor.
