Sports Network have swooped to sign Olympic heavyweight champion Alexander Povetkin, beating off stiff challenge from the world's leading promoters.

Povetkin makes his professional debut on the Ricky Hatton-Kostya Tszyu undercard and is being tipped to become the next big thing in boxing.
The Russian is a former kickboxing star like Ukrainians Vitali and Wladimir Klitschko, and like them cleaned up when he turned to amateur boxing.

Now the professional game awaits him.
The 25-year-old, who stands at 6'1 and weighs in at around 220 pounds, won the 1999 kickboxing World Cup and the 2000 European Cup.

As an amateur boxer he won the 2001 Good Will Games, the 2002 European Cup, the 2003 World Cup and the 2004 Olympics.

Those were just his stand out victories - the others are too long to list.
Now Povetkin is aiming to make his mark in the paid ranks, and Sports Network are delighted to have signed him.

Don King, Universum, Bob Arum and a host of other top promoters and promotional firms were after him - but it was allegedly who beat them to his signature.

Can national title will he fight for? Russian heavyweight title?

Roman Greenberg is able to fight for the British title yet hes not British so will Povetkin be able to fight for it? Or will he have to represent Britian to fight for it like Greenberg is?
