Is it too late?

Post by Ash-Weston »

Have been contemplating going back boxing for a while now and just want some opinions as to if i should. Ive just turned 24 and have had gym experience(sparring etc) but have never fought on a show. Im just wondering if its too late coz i dont wanna go back and do it half hearted....i wanna go the full way and eventually turn pro. Can i have some advice from you guys who know your stuff?. Cheers

Why don't you write into 'Dear Deidre' in the Sun newspaper, she will give you a honest unbiased answer, if that fails you could always try the Jeremy Kyle show.

24 is young - how old was Skelton? Audley? Marciano? You could probably name loads others - people will piss on your bonfire if you let them and it can stop you but having a strong mind is to go ahead and do it anyway - what is really stopping you?

if your looking to make a living out of it i'd say dont bother.

Dunno really. Probably the fact i was told that 24 is too old to get into it seriously.

Hurlock- If i train hard enough then whats to stop me(im looking at training 3 times a week if i can fit it around work)

Anyway ive made my mind up now so thanks for the opinions guys :TU:

24 is no age really , theres several ways to go , amateur , then if things work out turn pro , your weight division can have a bearing if its too late to considering going pro after , audley harrison was 31 i think when he had his first pro fight , but anything less than middleweight then youll possibly find that unless your incredibly naturally gifted so that you can fast track then the pros aint gonna happen , theres always white collar that can be done after the ams if you want to earn some paydays , as if your in your mid 30s you will still be young enough to start and be succesful , you could even go straight to white collar now if you wanted , but its widely considered best to get some good amateur experience behind you first .
i started amateur as i teen but quit before i was 20 , im now 30 and back in training to fight white collar on my own show in feb , so theres plenty of time , just take your time and things will go as they should , and listen to your coaches advices , dont rush into things they say your not ready for , as they will more often than not , be correct

Is that so? How is training coming along? Good on ya! Keep us updated with progress and good luck - what weight are you fighting at? I remember you telling us you were a featherweight as an amateur?

Didn't guys Martin Rogan & Nate Campbell start around that age & still have successful careers. Someone will probably tell me they started younger but that's what I heard.

Its not too late. You are still young enough and the standard at amatuer is not that good anymore, you might end up winning a divisional title within 2 years.

Stay focused on what you want to acheive.

you are still very young and so if you really want it, you can do well. Don't let anyone stop you from going after your dreams. everyone has an opinion but only you know how bad you want it and what you are prepared to do to get it. Go after it my man

Great advice cheers. Not gonna rush and just go with the flow. Im 6 foot 3 and weigh about 12 stone so i dunno what weight ill fight at eventually but im not gonna kill myself to drop weight off. If i grow naturally and it means i have to fight at a higher weight then so be it. As i said before i wanna do it properly this time and not be an impatient little shite like i was in my teens(i wouldnt listen to anybody thats why i never got anywhere at the gym i was at lol)

Concentrate on enjoying it. I'm all for dreaming etc but its a tough, tough sport where no corners can ever be cut if you want to maximise whatever ability you have and even then, for the vast majority they won't reach the level they want.

Why did u stop going when you were younger? This is important. If you love the sport and want it, how comes you gave up before?
The world is full of people who love the idea of being a boxer yet walk away when they realise just what it takes.

Good luck. Get yourself down the gym and listen to what they say. Don't walk in and tell them you want to turn pro etc, listen, learn and most important if all, enjoy it. Won't be good at anything unless you genuinely enjoy it.

I'm 24 and had 10 am fights now over 2 seasons into my 3rd now.
I train 6 times a week and if didn't I'd feel unpreperd for my bouts.

You've got plenty of time pal, 6months hard training/lots of sparing you'll be ready for a bout. Don't think about turning pro just yet. Get a few fights under your belt & see if you've got the dedication.

Fair play to ya mate. 6 times a week is true dedication especially after only 10 bouts. With work and everything 3 times a week at the moment is enough and ill see how i get on. Cheers for the advice :TU:

I stopped going when i was younger as i was moved around a lot etc etc and never really settled anywhere till now to be honest, so now i can concentrate properly . Ive always wanted to do it and now is the time. If i dont eventually turn pro then as long as i enjoy the amateurs then i dont mind that. Just wanna get in the gym asap. Ah well i dont have to wait long. Training is tomorrow night :box:

id say enjoy it too, dont tink about pro yet otherwise its needless pressure. what murlock was saying, if you go pro do it for the ride. majority fo pros still have full time day jobs as quite frankly unless your with a big name promoter and headlining each show then it wont pay the bills.

Had my first night at Sydenham a.b.c last night and really enjoyed it. Couldnt believe how unfit i was lol. This gym has to be the friendliest ive come across as well. Everyone wanted to get to know me and there were no prima donnas or any clicks. The coaches are very good and made me feel welcome....Am looking forward to Thursday and getting to have a little spar(if i remember my gumshield this time). No one in the gym tries to kill each other during sparring either( Last gym i was at when i was younger some lad tried to kill me in a simple touch sparring session lol)

All in all really enjoyed it :box:
