Just how Overrated was Kostya Tyzu?
In retrospect, his most significant win against Zab, hardly looks like a major feat considering how the rest of Judah's career turned out. Add to that the major quit job he pulled against a very limited Ricky Hatton (headbutts and holding being his weaponds of choice) and you start to wonder exactly how overrated Kostya really is. What else? A 38 year old faded JC Chavez? I probably wouldnt even include this him in the within the best 70 Junior Welters of all time.

He is probably right below Julio Cesar Chavez in terms of greatest JR WW. His only blemish is that he didnt have enough fights (due to injuries since 2002) and a super fight with Mayweather never happened.

Probably right below Oba Carr is more like it.
Chavez KO'd an undefead Meldrick Taylor who stopped Buddy McGirt (who would begin a HOF career after the loss) and then moved up in weight to dominate the much feared and undefeated power punching KO artist Champ Aaron Davis for the welterweight title.
The only real title Zab ever held was the undisputed king of hype. If thats Kostya's greatest win .......?

BOXERS OF THE PAST
You have a point, but considering the fact that he reigned twice making a number of defenses against most of the best the division had to offer during both reigns he deserves at least some of the reverence he gets. Sure, he missed out on De La Hoya, Mosley, Mayweather, Gatti, and Cotto but aside from DLH and Mosley, his challenging those guys was partially out of his control. The KO win over Judah is actually very impressive though considering nobody else has come close to doing the same thing to Zab, even as he's become less mobile.

I have nothing but respect for Tzyu, but he was indeed way overrated. I remember how he crashed The Ring's P4P ratings after nearly 2 years of inactivity just for knocking out Sharmba freakin Mitchell !! He also looked very unimpressive against an over the hill Jesse James Leija.
Re: Just how Overrated was Kostya Tyzu?
Tszyu is kind of like Lewis to me. Even at their "best" they both can look pretty crap, but in the end, most of the time they got the job done and had the power to makeup for their lack of overall consistency.

I count one person in the thread who has correctly spelled his surname.
How over-rated can he be?

Given a post like this is par for your very ordinary course, I wouldn't have you in my top-70 dullards of all-time. You are certainly reaching for the bottom of the barrel, though --- keep tryingLuckybattles wrote:In retrospect, his most significant win against Zab, hardly looks like a major feat considering how the rest of Judah's career turned out. Re: Just how Overrated was Kostya Tyzu?
Not overrated at all.......yeah he doesn't have De la hoya and Mosely on his resume, but who's choice was that, his or theirs?
He was the undisputed LT welter champion, and a two time champion, heres a retarded question, was Zab the invincible(at the time) knocked to kingdom come and as a result not the same fighter since? His potential had him earmarked as supermans son, and to see yourself get knocked out the way Zab got knocked the fornicate out, it would have to weigh on your confidence.
I think he belongs in the HOF somewhere.

Re: Just how Overrated was Kostya Tyzu?
It was theirs by virtue of the fact that they went after bigger money-makers (Whitaker and DLH respectively) just as he was either being upset by Vince Phillips or trying to recover from that loss, it was his by virtue of him never following them up to 147, or even fighting the likes of Forrest, Trinidad, or Quartey, which with victory could've then led to them.Hounddawg wrote:Not overrated at all.......yeah he doesn't have De la hoya and Mosely on his resume, but who's choice was that, his or theirs?

Re: Just how Overrated was Kostya Tyzu?
I don't think he is over-rated at all. Most people agree he was a good fighter but not quite an all-time great. I personally don't think he belongs in the HOF, but most likely he will be voted in.

People say, Its not RJJ's fault that there were no good fighters during his era. Or in this case, Its not Kostya's fault he didnt get the big fights. Maybe that's true but we cant give them those wins by default. Fact is they didnt fight and that argument shouldnt be used in their favor.

Re: Just how Overrated was Kostya Tyzu?
Ive been saying this for yrs...he is the overrated boxer Ive ever seen. His losses r against non HoF and his biggest win is against a more than likely non HoF. Chavez was 106 yrs old when they fought. He had a big ko punch give him that but the whole bs about th etop not wanting to fight please!!!!!! The ko loss to Vince Phillips must have scared them .....all he had to do was move to 147 with rest of the bad boys if he wanted big fights but he was cool defending his title against leo mas. If he would have moved up with the rest then where would they have went???? I mean sooner or later theyd end up at 154 but he would have got at least one fight. Tito would have literally killed him.

If you say so! Though I found a published opinion that differs....But you persueded me!, so it's not grammar for me either from this point forward!
English Language question: Is spelling considered part of grammar? Spelling is an integral part of grammar, which defines proper word usage, and taking the time to know and utilize the proper spelling of names of people and places.
Re: Just how Overrated was Kostya Tyzu?
Tszyu is an all time great. Saying otherwise is blasphemous.
But he won't be remebered among the elite of the legends.

Thank you Darling....I pride myself on my irreverence. However I'm not sure that has much to do with what we are talking about.

I think Kostya is somewhat under rated.

Always be eejit specific for best clarity. I was cut to the quick and suffered emotional trauma momentarily. At least until I saw your moniker. I will however refrain from any litigation.
I think KT does not get a fair shot. Taken purely on his skills and power I think he does better than expected vs the class of the Super Ligtweights.
Another SLW that gets less respect than he should is Antonio Cervantes. Both could have defeated Aaron Pryor prime vs prime. And I know that's blasphemy here.
KT didn't have a good group to show off his skills, and his unfortunate performance vs Hatton and Phillips probably defined him a bit too much. Just my opinion. I think he outperforms those lows if he would have had the chance.
Cervantes on the other hand, gives Loche a great run the first time, then beats him, (now there is some definition!) and overall he has quite a remarkable run. Of course he is beaten by the young phenom of Benitez and when he is pretty damn old is beaten by Pryor but those should not be the fights that define him. I think both KT and AC get the bums rush in ways that don't add up for me.
As I recall Darla....I believe you do not share my high opinion of KT...though we may be closer to the same page regarding Cervantes.
And Gudnite Irean......I always welcome your comments. Just don't be overly meretricious....you know what I mean here.

I would pick a prime Cervantes over Pryor. Aaron is all wrong for Tszyu, he would eventually mug him though Kostya would have a nice size advantage.
I'd say Pryor was better than Tszyu and he is also much more overrated.
