Will Martinez get first shot at the winner?
Re: Ireland GUARANTEED another European champion in November
Willie Casey now takes on Paul Hyland in an all-Ireland showdown for the vacant European super-bantamweight title in Limerick on November 6.
The impressive Casey was due to challenge Kiko Martinez for the title on the night but the Spanish puncher picked up an injury and relinquished. In comes Hyland, at relatively short notice, but the 25-year-old Dubliner has been linked to everyone at one time or another - from Rinty Monaghan to Bernard Dunne - and was due to fight on the Limerick undercard against a Russian and also holds the EU super-bantamweight title, a title he won in Italy, so he ranks as an excellent substitute.
Hyland, a pro since 2004 and one of three fighting brothers, rattled off 12 straight wins before he was floored and outscored by an ordinary Puerto Rican on a trip to the States in 2008, but he has won all his six fights since and outboxed Italy's Daniel Chianelli over 12 rounds in Napoli earlier this year to lift the EU belt. He will be smarting that the 28-year-old Casey, who turned pro just two years ago, is already neck-and-neck with him but Casey really does look a bit special at 10-0 (6), backed by a certain Barry McGuigan, and Hyland would be unwise to trade with the strong, aggressive Limerick man, who hits much the harder of the two.
I can see Casey struggling in the early rounds with the boxing skills of Hyland, but Casey will enjoy the course of his first 12-rounder and, roared on by massive support in his home city, pours it on from the middle rounds to force a late stoppage or a solid decision, in what should be a cracker.

Call me a doubting Thomas but I smell a rat. I wonder if Martinez was ever seriously going to face Casey. I remember how expensive it was for Peters to get Martinez to agree to challenge Dunne for the Euro title in Dublin, now he was going to defend it in Limerick against Casey?? I doubt that Peters was going to shell out money on a big outsider in Casey.
Good luck Paul Hyland. I hope that you dance rings around Casey and if he does, watch out for Caseys troublesome supporters.

Martinez was the mandatory challenger for Dunne. There was no way that fight was ever going to be in Spain. Martinez wouldn't fill a parish hall.Broc wrote:Call me a doubting Thomas but I smell a rat. I wonder if Martinez was ever seriously going to face Casey. Seems like a great fight. Very interesting. I wonder if Munrow will comeback and look to fight the winner next year. Seems logical.

Exactly, he is a bigger name in Macroom than in Madrid.FeargalóCuinneagáin wrote:Martinez was the mandatory challenger for Dunne. There was no way that fight was ever going to be in Spain. Re: Ireland GUARANTEED another European champion in November
will this also be for Hylands Irish belt??
I don't have a problem with this fight being for the European title as long as the winner will have to fight Kiko Martinez who is a genuine Euro level fighter.Simular to Matthew Hatton, he proved he belongs in this class with his last win.

I agree, this should be for all the marbles. Strange....
By the way, we're all getting caught up in Casey but there will only be one winner here and that's Hyland, unless Casey gets a homer.
Hyland is a better fighter.

Wouldn't agree,i think Casey will win easy,Hyland doesen't have a punch, its a pity that Martinez is out as the atmosphere would have been mighty especially with Martinez having beaten Dunne before, the fight might have been slow to sell, not too many people in Limerick talking about going but maybe Hylands fans will finish off filling the place.ApolloCreed wrote:I agree, this should be for all the marbles. Ha ha, wouldnt you love to be a member of staff that night. I was at his last fght in the UL Arena on Andy Lee undercard and it was comical watching crowds of travellers trying to distract the security men while others were trying to sneak in without paying.robpalmer135 wrote:I think Peters would prefer paying customers.ApolloCreed wrote:His famaily alone would half fill it!
Yes, the place was packed with young lads wearing tracksuit pants, a shirt, hooded jacket and a pair of shinny polished sunday mass shoes with the tracksuit legs tucked into their socks.
