Super 6.

Post by stujones »

Well I'm getting the impression that the Super 6 has been a little bit of a disaster for showtime - they now really don't seem to care much about it now. Firstly Johnson vs Green's fight is being aired as an undercard bout.... now we have Andre Ward vs Sakio Bika (for Ward's title) and I don't think it is part of the Super 6 line up.

Its being shown on showtime live, while the Froch vs Abraham bout is on delayed tape so it will be a double header feature the three remaining original Super sixers.

I think if the Super 6 had been a ratings success, then I am sure the powers that be wouldn't put in the super 6 points leader in a potential Bannana skin fight against someone not even in the list, or is Bika now a Super sixer?

Just what happens if Bika wins?

I don't think it would have worked with the seeded system. I think Abraham having never fought an elite fighter at Super Middleweight would have considered himself a tad fortunate to get a seeded position over someone like Jermain Taylor.

Let alone Ward who was untested at the time.

What i dont understand is why they just didnt make Ward- Dirrell and Froch-Abraham 2 semi finals and try to get both fights on the same bill i.e making it a mega event. of course now Dirrell has gone we are left with a super 3 and 3 late subs. what they should of done was make it a straight KO format with 8 fighters. the top 4 could of been seeded and it would made for 2 cracking semi finals. I would of had froch, Ward, kessler and Abrahams all seeded with Dirrell (or Bika), Green, Taylor, Johnson the other four to go in a hat. this would of surely led to all four seeded fighters making it to the semis with question mark over who had to fight Dirrell. of course Dirrell would never agreed not be seeded so this flawed in itself but we could always replace him with Bika
Spot on re the straight knockout format. I think they tried too hard to make it a unique (and therefore new/sellable) format whilst re-assuring the fighters that one defeat wasn't the end. The problem was that it just results in too many fights from the boxers point of view (especially the ones who've been on the wrong end of a shoeing).

Leaving Bute aside a knockout format leaves you with a genuine deserving champion. You offer these guys the right money, they'll soon forget about wrangles over seeding.

Formats like this are great until you have pullouts, then it a goes to pot. Straight elimination rids us of this issue.

I loved the idea, still do, and it's given us some great match ups already...but Ward and Dirrell were never going to fight each other. Dirrell got his title and now he's off home.

I think lining up fights so losers automatically get another title shot or big fight makes sense for everyone.

It was ward who kept Green and Johnson in the running.

They got all contractual, demanding their 3rd fight as stated in their agreement.

Another fight in Oakland....
