If Paul Smith has stayed in The Contender??
Had he not got injured agaisnt Banks. How would he have faired agaisnt Saki Bika, Sam Solmion and Jaidon Codrington?

Re: If Paul Smith has stayed in The Contender??
His face would have been cut to shreads by Bika's head that's for sure
Re: If Paul Smith has stayed in The Contender??
i think he would have gone on to win it. Pepe correa had em all on the pads at the start of the program and i remember him saying something along the lines of 'paul if your never world champion i will eat my own underwear'. i think he would have outboxed bika and soliman, could have come undone against codringtons power though

Sam Soliman would have been the troublesome one for him think he'd have been too solid for Cordington and too clever for Bika.

I think at that stage of his career,he would have found all three tough fights...Bika would have been a messy fight, prob close decision either way..Soliman would have been to nimble at that stage(but would fancy smigga now) Havnt really seen codrington a lot,so cant really say...

This is a really tough shout and without sounding like I am kissing his ass here are my thoughts.
Smith went into the contender on the back of 2 really good wins but both down at middle. So yes he was in with a good shout for an overall win.
Bika, always dangerous against anybody so cannot be taken lightly. soliman is a tough cookie and has unbelievable work rate and experience, but I think Smith was the better boxer. Codrington was massive and the more natural at the weight on only defeat was to Allen Green, not the greatest boxer though.
Overall my money would have been on the eventual winner Bika or Smith.

codrington is a very heavy hitter however has a suspect chin.

That's what I thought as well.King Geedorah wrote:Wasn't he on the outs anyway due to their point system and the fact that the Banks fight was a SD? Withdrew officially due to his conk problem but don't think he'd have gone to the next round anyway.
Smigga, apologies if I'm wrong here, please don't hit me, hit Rob, he started the thread.
The top four went through to the Semi-finals and Smith finished fifth so he didn't make it.
Re: If Paul Smith has stayed in The Contender??
shame he couldnt continue as bank's was only a club fighter. id of like to seen smith tested, but his level still remain's unknown for me.
but i guarantee he'd of got a yank accent

Styles don't trouble Paul and I would have fancied him to beat Soliman as he's only awkward, I think him and Codrington would be a shootout and Bika would be a trench war, I wouldn't write Paul off against anyone I really mean that, I watched him go to the wire with with both Pascal & Dirrell and even though it was the am's they both fight with the exact same style they did even then!! Paul fights to the level of the opponent and come December 11th I have a got feeling that Britian is gonna see the best of Paul Smith...

more fishing from rob....
My opinion. Soliman would not have been a hard fight. He is a nightmare to handle but stops in his tracks when hit hard, his chin was a bit questionable then also especially when hit by Alexander who couldn't punch.
Codrington and I would have been a cracker. I got close to him whilst in the 'house' and he was a good kid. Chin VERY suspect and mentally he knew it was. GOOD boxer who could hit as well.
Bika would have had too much for me at the time, looking back. I wasn't strong enough at 168, made the weight easily and physically over 10 rounds it would have told. I would have boxed him differently than I normally box, though. Tactically and ability wise I'd have done him but physically he'd have had the upper hand.
If I'd have been asked at the time, I'd have beaten the lot. 100%
I entered thinking Alan Greene was also in it.

it was the best contender line up when you look at it. Bika, Solimon, Vera, yourself all still world ranked and the final was a classic.Smigga wrote:more fishing from rob....

Were you not lined up for a rematch with Banks at the finals? why did it fall out of bed?
I tend to agree. Bika would be a good fight in a years time but being honest it wont happen. Nobody would fight him if they didn't have to.
Codrington could have gone either way really. Would fancy you agaisnt Solimon as he is a Light middle naturally.
are you still in touch with anyone from the show. I know you trained with McGrit but Correa seemd to love you more than the average boxrec poster.
Re: If Paul Smith has stayed in The Contender??
think smith is a good solid british/ wbu level fighter, but couldnt see him winning a major title such as wbc in middle or super middle due to the talent in those divisions at the mo

Yeah Pepe did, but that McGrit - sounds like a new McDonald's breakfast item.robpalmer135 wrote:it was the best contender line up when you look at it. Bika, Solimon, Vera, yourself all still world ranked and the final was a classic.Smigga wrote:more fishing from rob....

I broke my hand against Banks. Dislocated metacarpal. Couldn't train for the November 3rd date and fought 5 weeks later against Cello Renda.

What the hell is a WBU level fighter? Same as British level?
Never heard that one before, WBU doesn't even exist anymore does it?

out of interest Paul, how was Mr Mcgirt...heards varying stories of good bad and ugly, Ive always warmed to his corner work when its been audible..
Re: If Paul Smith has stayed in The Contender??
He was spot on. VERY good padman, knowledgeable too. Knows the game(goes without saying) and spots mistakes easily.J wrote:out of interest Paul, how was Mr Mcgirt...heards varying stories of good bad and ugly, Ive always warmed to his corner work when its been audible..
I rate him highly.... It just wasn't for me being based in the states at that stage of my career
Re: If Paul Smith has stayed in The Contender??

Re: If Paul Smith has stayed in The Contender??
Correct there Hurlock. There was talk of me boxing him in a Contender team vs UK team of mine. With greatest respect to Sam that was the only difference to him when he was on top - punch resistance. He was still extremely fit. Trained like an animal. Too much at times.
Re: If Paul Smith has stayed in The Contender??
He could beat Solimon and Codrington, but Bika is a level above Smith.robpalmer135 wrote:Had he not got injured agaisnt Banks. How would he have faired agaisnt Saki Bika, Sam Solmion and Jaidon Codrington?
