Beetroot Improves Stamina

Post by SAPFO »

Before I start, here is a link http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/8186947.stm

This was mentioned in another thread, and I am very interested to find out more info on this. A quick google tells me it also comes in the form of capsules, as well as in liquid form here http://www.hollandandbarrett.com/pages/ ... rodid=1992

I know one lad here just realized it has helped him, but are there any pro's on...er...beetroot juice? :D

Good deal on Holland & Barret website. 1 + 1 half price. Under £15 for a weeks supply of 500ml per day. What harm can it do?

Heres my post from the Harrison Thread where beetroot was mentioned
Note I'm a runner not a boxer, I race at least once a forthnight if not weekly over various distances and terrain, Im just an average club runner with an interest in watching boxing.

The holland and barrat stuff sounds pricey, why not go for the polish beetroot soup at Asda £1.67 for 1 litre. I add a bit of ginger powder and some chilli flakes for a bit of a kick, plus ginger is an anti inflamattry.

All,

Just a very quick one on the Beetroot thing, I have been drinking Beetroot soup quite regularly (about 2 Months) Monday to Friday at work for lunch. I got a taste for it on a visit to Poland with the missus. I could not figure out why my race (Running) times over the last few months have improved so much. I have only been running (training) on a Wednesday and Racing at the Weekend. In my latest 5K race I did a Sub 20min PB, I have not been able to even touch that for 7 Years.

Until I read this thread, I could not understand what I was doing differently apart from running less than I have done in the past.

After reading this thread, I did a quick google search and found the article on The Exeter University Study.

I get my soup from the world food section in Asda (its Polish) £1.67 for 1l. I seriously think this is what could be having an effect on my running. I have also felt generally more comfortable in races as well as the PB.

Give it a whirl and let me know your findings.

Cheers

There could be some truth in it. I've recorded better times for 10k runs when I've eaten some Beetroot earlier :geek:

Beetroot juice could help you exercise for 16 per cent longer because the nitrate it contains reduces oxygen uptake which make exercise less tiring.
Scientists believe the finding will be of use not only to athletes but also to elderly people and those with metabolic, respiratory or cardiovascular diseases.
The study was led by researchers from the University of Exeter and is published in 2009.

Beetroot has plenty of benefits; my dad's drinking beetroot juice every day at the moment to help reduce his high cholesterol.

Admittedly, the 10 pints he has at the weekend are probably undoing the good work but the intention is there, bless him!

So is it ok to drink it every day?

Also for playing football you can just drink it every week or is it beat to just build up to one off events such as a race or a fight?

Now as an allotment owner, Beetroot is a very simple veg to grow, i do a very good chilli pickled beetroot.

If your going to grow it, then get organic or origanal variety seeds, better taste than hybrid ones.

I have not even considered the taste yet. I don't mind a beetroot, but I can see this joining the protein shakes as a thrown down the neck job.

Stick some ginger powder and some chilli's in it pal, it makes a lovely swap for cup-a-soup.

I've got the same 5k race in 3 weeks so i'll see if regular drinking of the stuff helps.

I'm not sure whether loading up on the stuff all the time or just shocking the system with it on race day will work best.

I hope we get the answers in this thread. This is interesting stuff, and seems a relatively new discovery.

MachoMan09 wrote:How is this a new thing? Beetroot soup (borscht) has been a national dish in pretty much all the old eastern bloc countries for generations. The vegetable's qualities are well known there. The greatest wrestler of all time (Alexander Karelin) used to neck the stuff down like water.

Why pay over the odds, at Holland & Barrett or wherever, when you can simply buy fresh beetroot and stick it in a blender? Better quality, better value. Some people are mad.
Is it this simple then? People have mentioned to get certain beetroots, whereas I thought a beetroot was a beetroot.

Went into the local Polish shop. She could not speak English, and I did not see it in there.
