Prime Tyson vs prime Liston

Post by Lexus »

A lot of people mention Liston's jab as being his main asset but Tyson's jab was a lot faster albeit not as powerful. I still say Liston KO's Tyson mainly because I think he would be intimidated by Liston.

What do you think?

Prime Liston wins every time.

He was harder than Tyson.

He once fought with a broken jaw & I couldn't imagine Tyson doing that.

Man, when talking of jabs you cannot even mention Tyson in the same sentence with Liston. Listons jab could go through a brick wall. Tyson was never much of a jabber. I mean when he was young he did jab a bit, but that was just a distraction so he could get close while keeping his foe busy with some leather in his face. Mike wasnt a jabber. Liston was. And Liston had also a monster reach: 84`` while Tyson is kind of stumpy at just 71`` so no way. Tysons jab was not in the same league with Listons.

If on the other hand you want to talk just punching power, then yes, Tyson was perhaps as hard a puncher as liston in the hooks, crosses and uppercuts department. Tyson was a good left hook guy. His right was also mean.
Funny thing, they still are mean punches. He just doesn get to land them as much and as clean as earlier. But the power is still there. Maybe 10% off but still quite impressive.

Tyson would be coming forward constantly and he was so damn skilled, that Liston would have a hard time hitting him. Tyson would get inside and KO him worst than Ali did him.

DONT BRING UP FLOYD PATTERSON/HE IS NOT MIKE TYSON

Liston would have to establish distance and keep Tyson on the outside. I think he would be able to do it. His trouble was with lateral movement and Tyson would becoming right at him. Jabs and right hands would do the trick like Lennox Lewis did.

Six round war with Sonny coming out on top, clubbing a disheartened Tyson to the canvas.
Mike would put up a helluva fight - great chin remember - but Liston, at his peak, would've been too much of a destroyer for anyone coming straight at him - except maybe Foreman...

Have to agree with MightyWarrior. It's a matter of styles and Tyson is going to be walking on to Liston.

Liston, no question. Too strong, too fierce, better boxing skills, and enough power to hurt Tyson continually. I think he would have given Tyson a ferocious beating.

Two intimidating fighters, so who would intimidate who?

If Tyson did his trash talking bit before the fight can you imagine the pre fight stare down Sonny would give him? Those cold killer eyes would be tearing into tysons soul.

Liston would scare the hell out of Tyson. Tyson was an emotionally fragile, confused bad man. Sonny was just a real BAD MAN . . . it would last about 6 rounds but Tyson would fall. As one poster said you needed constant lateral movement and slick boxing to trouble Liston. You couldn´t out-slug him, esp. when he had a big eqaulizer with that big jab of his if the infighting wasn´t going his way.

Come on now of all the people to ignore, you have something to say.

You are the same guy that was ridin' Ruiz dick.

Yeah I know, I know, it was to see how people would react

Why wouldn't you just ask people what they thought of Ruiz instead of sucking his balls, then you would have found out what people thought of him.

If I just asked people what they thought about Ruiz, do you think I would've gotten those fierce and emotionally intense four-paragraph replies? No, instead, I copied what the Ruiz fanatics had written on Ruiz' official forum, which, by the way, has been taken away due to lack of support (you can thank me for that one), and pretended to be a fan of Ruiz here. You can believe it or not, it's up to you. I can assure you though, that you won't see me posting any pro-Ruiz crap ever again.

Now, why I advised Tantum to ignore you was because of several reasons: For one, you are 15 years old - you haven't even gone through puberty yet. There's no point arguing with a hormonally unstable Tyson fanatic.

Secondly, I'm still shivering from that comment you made about "handing out ass whoppins". I got goosebumps reading it because it was probably one of the most ridiculous comments I have ever seen. A normal person would've been very embarrassed about that - you weren't, thus there is something wrong with you.

Have a nice day :TU:

You could have done something else besides riding John Ruiz's dick to get your "intense long paragraphs" as you say it?

Me being 15 has nothing to do with anything about boxing, or me being "hormonally unstable". You don't know half as much about boxing as I do.

As for someone being embarrassed to say that they would hand out asswhoopins. Well I still have nothing to say about that, that's just how it would and could go down.

Maybe you guys should take a cold shower and then calm down. :D
You are acting like you are 2 Don King fighters and the ticket sales arent good. So you play it up with mock threats and verbal barbs.

Come on. Make peace guys. :TU:

Being 15 has nothing to do with being a Tyson fanatic. I am on too and I am way past 15. Tyson was very good and entertaining. Too bad he lacked to discipline and/or guidance to steer away from the bad bunch that crowded around him.
He could have been the best ever. He bummed it. But he is still a top 10 of all time. And even today he can still beat some champs. Like Brewster, even Ruiz. So never sell Tyson short. He is no longer the man, but he can still beat a lot of top 20s even now.

Cheers

Tyson would win this one. At his peak he was faster and had good defense. He also hit harder than anyone Liston ever fought. He hit harder than damn near all heavy's ever. It would be exciting though. I still like Mike in a slugfest. He would slip right under a Liston jab and take him out with a hook.

I think being 15 has someting do to with the amount of reason behind your arguments, especially when the subject is Mike Tyson, but you're right, jab, how about a truce Grimm?

Are you sure, when was the last time Tyson beat anyone in the top 20? Danny Williams was top 30 at best.

Could you really imagine Liston in his peak (not in '65, when he was probably past 40), being taken out by a single shot? :-? I can't, he was too tough! Any man that can fight with a broken jaw must be tough.

Ok, I'm with the truce and all.

Just a little puzzled about the Don King statement.

Liston would destroy Tyson, he loved fighters that came to him. Liston would break Tyson up with the jab and ko Mike in about 5 or 6.
