Hagler / Hearns Rd. 1
I haven't watched as many fights as most of you, but from what I've seen Rd. 1 of the Hagler / Hearns fight was by far the greatest opening round ever. Are there any opening rounds that rival the first round of Hagler / Hearns in terms of pure tenacity?
Hagler - Hearns Round 1. Recently the question was posed that had Tommy not broken his hand, would he have beaten Marvin. IMO not a chance in hell. Look for Hearns' legs to be decidedly wonky later in the round

I don't think that Hearns would have beaten him but I think it would have been a much closer fight had Tommy's right hand not broken. At the end of the first Hearns catcher Hagler flush a few times but you can see by Marvin's reaction that they're not having the same effect.
Then again if Hearns could have kept Marvin off him for a few more rounds (which is feasible if he still has full power in his right) and that cut had got worse...

Arguello/Pryor 1 - first round was unbelievable, ranks alongside Hagler/Hearns.
The first and only round of Ray Mancini/Art Frias was almost like a 15 rounder.
Sanchez/Gomez - wont go down as a classic first round, but it was a real shocker to see Sanchez knockdown and batter Gomez The Great like that, so early in the fight.
PacMan/Marquez was similar...

Re: re
Is there any way that I could get my hands on a tape of the Dempsey/Firpo fight? From what I've read, it was insane. Firpo was down, what, 7 TIMES before knocking the living shit out of Dempsey! Then some how Dempsey staggers up and winds up knocking Firpo out! That NEVER happens in heavyweight fights. If anyone could help me out, I would be much obligedbarry wrote:There have been some good ones, but whenever the question comes up it's Hagler-Hearns that always comes to mind first. Dempsey-Firpo is another.
