Chris Eubank vs Mike McCallum?

Post by Final round »

Do you think Chris would have fared better than Michael Watson if he'd ever fought the bodysnatcher.
I know McCallum's body shots would have been hell for Chris but was wondering if his potshotting and accurate counters would have posed more of a challenge than meeting McCallum head on and trying to beat him at his own game like Watson seemed to do. :TU:

Roy Jones jr said McCallum was one of the fighters he had the utmost respect for with regards talent in his era.

McCallum would have opened him up like a can of tomatoes.

Eubank, whilst very entertaining, was vastly overrated in the UK.

lol how was he over rated? People always blab on about the yanks would have beaten the brits in the smw division , and yet they held all the cards and didnt make the fights. On any occassion when they have taken the fights they've lost.

McCallum was taken the distance by a green / certainly unpeaked or anywhere near prime collins. A collins that at his absolute peak still couldnt dispatch a past his prime post watson Eubank.

But that actually doesn't mean anything.
For what it's worth, I think it all depends on two things - when the match would have been made and, relating to this, what weight it would have been fought at. McCallum was certainly the superior talent though.

it's tempting to be dismissive of eubank, but this would have been a big deal for mccallum, a good payday for a guy who struggled to get the biggest fights, against a considerably bigger and faster (in spurts) man. mccallum's obviously far too solid and his clever pressure would probably have eubank seriously gassing, but eubank could come up with moments of class and inspiration.

how good would it have been if mccallum, unable to land fights with the fantastic 4 (hearns, leonard, hagler, duran) due to bad timing, lack of charisma/clout and so on, could have fought all the "british" fantastic 4 (as one observer called them, noting collins' nationality): benn and eubank, to add to his wins over collins and watson.

McCallum would have chased Eubank all over the ring, pretty much like Watson did in the second half of their fight, but I think he'd have really hurt Eubank downstairs and stopped him late or ran out points winner. Eubank would've had his moments early on, but McCallum would have worked him over gradually. I mean, I believe Watson wasn't quite at his best for the McCallum fight, but he was basically given a boxing lesson.

I loved Eubank, Benn and Watson but I think they were just a level short of McCallum and Toney, and another notch or two below Jones at both middle and supermiddle.

as with the toney fight, i believe Eubank's habit of taking time off during rounds (and often a lot of it) would lead to him giving up rounds to Mike's jab. 7-5 type win IMO

McCallum struggled with movers, so Eubank would have done OK on his bike, but ultimately McCallum was simply a better fighter than Chris, and the Watson fight proves it, and Mike would have come through on a decision.

Thanks for the all the reply's. :OhYes: Pretty unanimous that Mike would take it then, I generally thought Mike was a more complete fighter than Chris but I know that he would have given a good account of himself with his individual style and I don't think he would have been stopped, hurt yep but like Mike says in the last comment he was one tough man. Even Thompson couldn't stop him let alone Benn and Collins

I really liked the idea of McCallum fighting Britain's 'Big Four', I'm sure a fight with Benn and Chris would have been barnstormers!

That's interesting that Roy rates him so highly, praise indeed.

Cheers

mcalluym would of beat him on the inside & outside.

you saw how close watson & eubanks were in terms of ability, mcallum would of broke down eubank & possibly stopped him.

eubank's best wins was against benn, watson, rochiani. none on mcallum's level :!: a toney, jones, nunn, mcallum would of spanked eubank :!: hard guy to stop but if thompson could do it, these guy's more so.

:OhYes: It took Thompson two fights to get Chris out of there, Of course different skill sets but he was as tough as the amigo's you say above. He took Benn's best shots, he could have taken any of the above flush and survived.
