I have vague and fond memories of watching one on Joe & max when I was a kid. It probably doesn't stand the test of time, but whatever the name was I loved it when I saw it. I'm guessing I was 8 or 9 and Joe Louis was just someone I had read about.
The majority of them suck, like Cinderella Man. That portrayal of Max Baer as a blood thirsty killer was shameful.

There actually was a decent enough telemovie called, Joe & Max about ten years ago.SaadOffTheDeck wrote:I have vague and fond memories of watching one on Joe & max when I was a kid. Sadly, that's about 20 years too late. Unless it was late landing in Australia.

Yes, obviously that's not the movie you speak of. It was worth a watch nonetheless, though. Whoever played Schmeling was pretty convincing.SaadOffTheDeck wrote:Sadly, that's about 20 years too late. Unless it was late landing in Australia.

Re: BEST FILM ABOUT A REAL LIFE BOXER
I have yet to see a boxing flick with fight scenes that are even remotely realistic. As for films about real life fighters I thought Raging Bull was ok, at least it presented a believable portrayal of LaMotta unlike the sycophantic drivel usually served up.

Good call, great movie. I can see it on my shelf from where I sit. Can't believe I forgot that one, it's a runaway winner for me.

The Raging Bull and Somebody Up There Likes Me are my favorites I've seen. Raging Bull edges it out as being slightly better.

"The Raging Bull" was great.
"Somebody Up There Likes Me" also was excellent.
I also like "The Greatest" with the same Muhammad Ali acting.

It's a sentiment I've heard from lots of people, but you can't deny the brilliance of DeNiro in that film. His defining role for my money.Goodnight, Irene wrote:Raging Bullsh!t!Deno1986 wrote:Raging Bull in my opinion.

I won't deny him his performance (even though it is well-known how over-rated I find him), it was pretty fucken convincing. That's true.
However, he can't save the flick. It stank.
