Will Audley really step it up this year?

Post by Chopping Right »

The way I see it if Audley Harrison really did step up his level of competition this year he could still make a big noise in the States. Look at Calvin Brock, up until 2005 he was pretty much treading water, then a couple of wins against Etienne and McCline and he's in the top 10 and the world title mix. And let's be honest, Etienne and McCline are hardly the most fearsome opponents imaginable. You'd have to give Audley a chance with guys like that, but what are the chances of him actually doing the same? So far not so good really.

No chance, don't get your hopes up. He is at least a year behind the likes of Brock and Peter, maybe even two years. This Olympic Champion is happy enough to sit on his arse for a year doing nothing, ducking British contenders then running off to America where there are a whole host of bums he can dish out beatings to. The British public are sick of him fighting opponents with no credibility and he has a clean slate in America to continue doing that. For at least another year he will be fighting the likes of Cliff Etienne, Gilbert Martinez, Yanqui Diaz, basically all of the boxers Brock and Peter have already disposed of with ease.

I would put any money on Harrison never fighting Brock or Peter. If it came to it he would either purposely price himself out of the bargain or pick up an 'injury'.

It's a pity really because he has talent but isn't willing to take on a challenge. Look at Brock, he lost in round 1 of the Sydney olympics where as Harrison won the damn gold medal. Compare the two careers so far...enough said.

He's had a pretty serious injury he's been getting over, hardly happy sitting on his arse is it?? Lets give him a chance to step it up this year and early next, I think he may do so.

He has no choice but to step it up this year.

He is a laughing stock in this country to most, and being over taken by the prospects in America.

Shit or bust for him now because he made a rod for his own back.

Rubbish and an ignorant biassed one-sided post

He hasn't been sitting on his arse for a year, he has been injured, its boxing it happens.

He hasn't been ducking British contenders, in fact when he announced that he wanted to challenge for the British title, the then British champion Danny Williams and Dannys next challenger Michael Sprott both moved from the BBC where Audley was fighting to sign for Audleys arch-rival allegedly (Frank to tried to sign Audley when he turned pro, but Audley turned him down) making the fight near on impossible to make, so it could be argued that that they are ducking him.

When the BBC announced that they were ceasing to show pro boxing Audley and allegedly went into negotiations for an Audley Vs Skelton fight for the British title.

The negotiations broke down and nobody apart from the people involved know the full reasons why, but at that time Audley was in a difficult situation as he didn't have a broadcaster and I don't think that allegedly wanted to give Audley the platform to relaunch his career or run the risk of having his fighter beat on Sky TV (FW's broadcaster) and have the embarrassment of it all. Would you put it past Frank?

From the start of Audleys career he has said that 2005 will be his BIG year, unfortunately he has had to put it back 6 months due to this injury. Audley is having this warm-up/comeback fight against Davis then his next fight will be on a HBO card against someone of McClines stature IMO (the card will be headlined by Peter), then providing he comes through these fights he should be fighting Peter or Brock which will lead to the winner being backed by HBO and an inevitable shot at a title.

Audley has had 3 injuries since turning pro which have slowed his progress, which is why Peter and Brock are slightly ahead of him at the moment. Audley is 17-0 he has looked good in spells and his first 17 opponents have been at a higher level than what both Peters and Brocks were.

If you really think that Audley is going to 'purposely price himself out of the bargain' or fein injury  and never step up his level of competition then you are a fool.

He has been criticised by fellow boxers, he has been criticised by the press, he has been criticised by rival promoters and he has been criticised by 95% of internet forum posters, what better motivation could Audley have to win the World title and prove that everybody was wrong and that he was right?

Sorry mate but you are either a very optimistic person or you have been sucked into the usual Harrison garbage can. I know he has ability and I remember watching Williams getting a pasting from Vitali thinking 'what if Audley was in there instead of Williams'. But to me he has not got the desire to be a proper world champion, that's just the feeling I get.

I was just pointing out that your post was unbelievably one-sided and adding some balance to the argument. It could be argued that you have been sucked into all the anti-Audley propaganda that has been going around.

I can't understand why you say he has no desire to be a World Champion, he is a dedicated pro boxer whose life ambition is to be World Champion.

If its just a feeling that you've got with little to back it up then I would say that you are definately just jumping on the anti-Audley bandwagon. It seems fashionable to take a pop at Audley

Hmm, I'd like to believe in Audley as much as anyone, but I'd have to say in 4 years, regardless of problems, he could have made much more progress had he wanted to. Just the quality of opposition he's selected has said that much.

Yeah I agree with that.

British champion in 5 fights and all that - he still has only fought 1 fighter who is in the British top ten at the time (of course, Krence is there now).

An Olympic champion at 28 (or around there) that original plan was the right idea he did need to get a move on and should have had the confidence in his ability (as Olympic champion) to accomplish that.

Do I think Audley will step it up this year? No, cause his track record in the last four years hasn't shown much progress.

I actually agree with this post. Harrison is a victim of his own hype as much as anything, people may have been a little more patient if he had not turned pro amidst a barrage of self promotion and wild boasts none of which have come to fruition. He hasn't even fought anyone decent yet.

Hes already rich - theres no hunger inside him. There isn't a devastating punch there, he throws about 10punches a round. He does have the skills and the size but it won't be enough. You can't have weak punches, not throw many punches and expect to beat even todays top 10.

If Harrison throws more punches a round he could be up there but I don't see it happening.

He hasn't shown a real desire to fight a top30 fighter either.

He's going nowhere and never has been, in my view. Watched him in the Olympics but just never got the slightest vibe he was going to do something in the pros. Late last year I predicted this year would be the one that he had to put his nads on the chopping block, but so far it's just been a repeat of other years.
Sounds like I'm hating, but the thing is, I've got no problem with the guy - he seems alright in interviews and media appearances, and hopefully he has earned his money (if he ever needed any in the first place, Park Royal and Edmonton sound swish). Anyway, I did a quick search on boxrec to try and give an example how this hype has been carrying on through the years. Here's the first one that caught my eye:

Audleys first 17 oponents have been better than virtually all other HW's and he definately has the desire to make it to the top to prove that he was right and virtually everbody else was wrong.

There are still unanswered questions hanging over Audley such as his chin and his stamina and we'll have to get answers to these questions before we know if he'll make it to the top of the tree, but just because these questions are unanswered it doesn't mean that he is lacking in either department

Judge Audley in 12 months time

(The Albion done well day they Steve  )

Manos Audley was not brought up in an over provileged family. Audley has been injured all this yeaar so how is it a repeat of other years??? could you explain as I don't understand that comment at all.

What is that link to a previous topic supposed to prove?? Audley has always said that this will be his BIG year (its been delayed 6 month through injury), so what a list of posts by other Audley-haters proves is beyond me.
