Gavin Rees v Watson - Newport
I will be in Wales for the Wales v Australia game on Saturday.
Staying in Newport and had thought about going out there after the rugby. Anybody got any idea what newport is like for a night out. I was there a few years back when the Rugby World cup was on, but was too wasted to remember what it was like.
Just thinking that with the Rees fight on against a fighter from Liverpool, there may be an influx of pent up fight fans steaming into the Newport nightclubs at about midnight. Not sure I really want to see that to be honest.
Maybe staying in cardiff for the night out is a better option?
Any thoughts?

You would be better staying in Cardiff but Cardiff hotel prices may be more expensive and you may have a hard time finding accomodation.forcefraser wrote:I will be in Wales for the Wales v Australia game on Saturday.

Stay in Cardiff for the night out and get a taxi back to Newport. Cardiff is a great night out. I studied there for a year and had a great time. St Mary Street on a Saturday is a laugh and I think the bar of choice these days is the Vodka Revolution one. I'm going for the Wales v New Zealand game on 27th.

Shame this wasn't John Murray v Rees.
As good as Watson is, this is a tall order giving away huge experience and strength to Rees.
Rees by stoppage.

Cardiff = fantastic night out.
Newport = probably the worst town I've ever visited in the UK.
Never been out in Newport at night and never will. I would move heaven and earth to stick with Cardiff if I was you

Decent folk from Newport tend to go out in Cardiff, leaving the underagers and jobless who can't afford a taxi staying local!
I would recommend Swansea though

The checkmate in Caerphilly is a must see for any visitor.
Not been to Newport in years but I can't see it having a better night-life than Cardiff. The Brewery Quarter and Mill Lane for the better bars and clubs. Greyfriers Road for the younger generation though Tiger Tiger is also there.
Revolution on Duke Street opposite the Castle is a good bar/club aswell.
St.Mary Street has a few bars but nothing any good just the usual stuff i.e Walkabout.
Millennium Plaza has the god awful Jumpin' Jacks and a few other bars.
Also, decent bars in the scenic Cardiff Bay but that's another taxi ride from Cardiff centre.
If you want 'grab a granny' then goto Kiwi's in the arcade or The Parachute Club (Wynford Hotel) on Clare Street.

Newport is an unmitigated shithole. Cardiff is cool as fuckery so there's no question really.

I was more a Camelot type - but some how the Checkmate survived.WelshDevil wrote:The checkmate in Caerphilly is a must see for any visitor.![]()

It almost has land mark status to us locals. Much like how somebody described Newport, its full of underage girls and types too skint to get a taxi anywhere decent ....and its been like that for the 25+yrs i can remember.

Yep, Newport is a dump for the most part. Hotels are cheap, especially the Travel Lodge in the town centre, rooms from £20 a night. Also only 5-10 minute walk to the leisure centre. Girls aren't as nice as Cardiff ones, but a lot easier!! The best place to go after is the Basement(it's just changed its name to something else, can't remember waht but anyone will know it) on Stow Hill. Good club that's well priced. Good luck and enjoy the 'Port

Cheers fellas.
Had a top time in Wales. Went out in Cardiff and got the last train back to Newport and went out in Newport for a couple of hours.
Cardiff was great. Good pubs and friendly birds. Newport was alright to be honest. Fairly rough in parts, but no worse than Wakefield where I grew up. Birds even freindlier in Newport. We ended up in a place called Dalillla.
Rough as arseholes this morning.
