Is Arguello the best ever at 130lbs?
Re: Is Arguello the best ever at 130lbs?
Was superfeather a weight class recognized by the world when Saddler and Armstrong were fighting?
Re: Is Arguello the best ever at 130lbs?
From the boxrec encyclopedia: "The super featherweight division was created by the New York Walker Law in 1920, although first established by the New York State Athletic Commission (NYSAC) in 1930. The first English champion was 'Battling Kid' Nelson in 1914 who lost his title to Benny 'Kid' Berger in 1915. Artie O’Leary also claimed this lightly regarded title in 1917. This weight class can be divided into two distinct historical periods: 1921-1933 and 1959-present."Grimm wrote:Was superfeather a weight class recognized by the world when Saddler and Armstrong were fighting?
It was originally called the "jr. lightweight" division. I don't think it was called "super featherweight" until the late 70s or early 80s.
BTW, I remember that Saddler claimed the junior lightweight title in 1949 - although the division was not considered active by most commissions at that time, and his claim was recognized only in Ohio.

Re: Is Arguello the best ever at 130lbs?
My pick of the winner is Henry Armstrong, second place Sandy Saddler, Arguello taking third place against Chavez who will finish at number four. At this weight Camacho and Mayweather is a tossup, but clearly below the previous four.
Henry Armstrong
Sandy Saddler
Flash Elorde
Alexis Arguello
Hector Camacho
Brian Mitchell
Julio Cesar Chavez
Floyd Mayweather
Brian Mitchell excellent fighter but not tested enough against better quality oposition. Hard to judge. What was his best win? Against Lopez?
Elorde too many loses in his prime. He has a solid win against Saddler but was later avenge by Saddler. Probably I’m underrating him but I don’t see him winning such a tournament.

for me the best 130 lber was the late Diego Corrales, and next to him is no other than Juan Manuel Marquez ;) who also beaten great lightweight rulers such as Juan Diaz and Joel Casamayor, if Floyd fights Dinamita in a much lighter division; the story will have a different ending :) What do u think guys?

I think you need a history lesson.
Re: Is Arguello the best ever at 130lbs?
My field for the all-time jr. lightweight tournament would include, in alphabetical order:
Alexis Arguello
Henry Armstrong
Tony Canzoneri
Kid Chocolate
Jim Driscoll
Flash Elorde
Willie Pep
Sandy Saddler
I'd put my money on Hammerin' Hank.

Just think Saddler has the style and tenacity to come out on top.

Yes, he was also one of the best punchers at the weight and was as hard as nails.Rocky Balboa wrote:Wasn't Saddler big, very tall for the weight?Ezzard wrote:Agree with the list.Mr E wrote:My field for the all-time jr. lightweight tournament would include, in alphabetical order:

Armstrong-Saddler would be an amazing fight.

This is what can happen when Current Scene trash wanders into a forum comparatively light-years ahead of it in knowledge. The only thing worse than the spelling is the woeful sentiment, & all accomplished in one swift, devastating sentence.
Here, it's embarrassing. Over there, it's par for the course.
Re: Is Arguello the best ever at 130lbs?
Without doubt Arguello best ever at 130.

Tszyu wasn't even the best 140lber of his generation. De La Hoya was better.tanibanana wrote:130-lbs not 140-lbs..nuclearfist78 wrote:its not the spelling, its the thought that counts ;)![]()

Pulling that back up to defend yourself after 9 months is really bizarre.
