London gym recommendations needed

Post by mkirkhope »

Hi all.

I started doing boxing training about a year ago before needing a knee operation. I'm now looking to get back into it and am looking for a suitable gym in (reasonably central) London.

I've got no intention of fighting or even full sparring but would like to do proper boxing training rather than any boxercise-type personal training. My main goals are to get fit but also learn good technique. I'm a big boxing fan and am fascinated by the training.

I just saw the 'boxing gym' film on the Lord's gym in Austin and that's the sort of place i'm looking for - unpretentious, friendly people, and a mix of serious fighters and people just trying to get fit who like boxing. Not interested in the places fully of city boys training for white collar events.

Any recommendations? They would be much appreciated. Have tried searches on here with limited success so apologies if similar queries have been answered already.

Cheers

Though there are people on here from around the world, I think most of the people who post here on the amateur forum are from USA. There is a British amateur boxing site at http://www.warriorboxing.com/ where you will probably get more responses on London gyms.

Bear in mind though that some of these amateur gyms won't really be too keen on taking on someone interested in just fitness and learning technique. They are looking for lads who want to actually box. One gym that does bridge the gap between the fitness side and amateur boxing however is the All Stars Gym in Harrow Road, NW London. They are a very approachable bunch there and you'll enjoy it. Otherwise the list posted earlier is good.
