Lewis isn't, arguably or not, and even if he was, everyone has an off night, so it means nothing, he won the fight.

:OhYes:

ask george foreman where he rates lewis....

personally i'd rate him top 5 at least...

regardless my point is that frank bruno was outboxing him thru the majority of his fight...as bruno is not regarded as anywhere near an all time hw great we have a contradiction here...

so was it just an off-night for lennox?

or was bruno underrated thruout his career?

btw - sg1985 - that's cos the yids are shite. :DD

And Joe Louis got outboxed by 167lb Billy Conn, Ali nearly got knocked out by Cooper and lost to Norton and Frazier, Marciano may have lost to LaStarza amongst others, Tyson got dominated by Buster Douglas

Lewis has a case to be no1 imo

Whilst I thought Lewis was possibly at or around his physical peak at 1993 - he was way off his peak in terms of combining physical attributes, experience, and boxing brain. He was brainwashed by Correra - plus he still won and was always going to win from the 5 round onwards. Tide had turned a few rounds before the KO.

Would have loved to have seen Lewis turn pro under Steward.

I think a case could be made for Frank being underated - but that is looking at his career as a whole and certainly not just on the evidence of a few rounds against an inexperienced, Lewis who I do feel took Frank lightly.

Frank Bruno at the time he fought lewis was a much more experienced fighter at pro level than Lennox who was a late developer,i would have lewis in my top 5 without a doubt.

I think Lewis was one of the top 10 heavyweights judged on what he achieved and how he did most of it.

Regarding Bruno, I have always felt he was hugely under-rated, Frank always got stick off the boxing public for his chin/reaction to being in trouble etc but his jab was world class, his power has to have been world class and he actually picked his power shots far better than people ever gave him credit for. He got a rough deal in my book as to how good he was and that will never change watch the replies to this to confirm that theory.

Could Franks performance in this fight also be attributed to the fact he was angry due to some of the things said by Lewis in the build up to the fight and was much more fired up and determined to beat Lewis?

Arguably, yes.

Bruno would be a long down the list, but Frank put it all on the line against Lennox and gave him a tough fight.

i agree....watchin this fight again recently and i was shocked at how much better bruno was than i remember him...i was a kid back then and not really versed in the finer points of the game but there's still a huge disconnect in how i remember him and the reality of his skills...

I think it would be interesting to see how Bruno would get on today, he would definitely have got his shot at the Klitschkos, he would be right up their street!

Bruno would probably put up as good a show as most of the Klits challengers even now.

Agreed, it would just be a shame that (what I feel was) his biggest asset, the jab might not be as advantageous due to their size/reach...

Interesting thought. If Bruno could land the right cross flush, you never know....

I have never come across any list with Lennox number one, and I have never seen anyone try to argue that he was the number one heavyweight of all time. I don't think it is arguable. Bruno was a good fighter, but I don't consider him an all time top heavy. He was in a similiar class as Razor Ruddock, imo.

Bruno must be close to being the greatest of all time. Not only did he give Lewis trouble, he also beat Jumbo Cummings, who drew with Joe Frazier, who beat Ali...

Same here. I was a teenager through the early-mid 90s and remember the stick Bruno used to get, but in retrospect he was very decent and would certainly do well in today's division.

Another one in that category was Tommy Morrison. I remember him being written off as a crude slugger, yet re-watching some of his fights recently, he was much better than I remembered or gave him credit for at the time.

Those guys just suffered by comparison due to fighting in one of the most competitive heavyweight eras.

Defining the 'greatest' may turn on a number of interpretations. The best pure record (Marciano) is not regarded by many as the most important measurement. The greatest contribution to the sport counts for something (Louis, perhaps, for changing social attitudes towards black fighters); most influential (Ali probably); best record against fighters of his generation (Lewis can't be far from the top here, avenging his defeats at his peak (McCall, Rahman) as did Ali of course, but also beating the other premier heavyweights of his time (Tyson, Holyfield, Klitschko).

There is no definitive answer. Just as we'll never know how Bradman would shape up against Tendulkar, or Nicklaus against Woods, we can only guess at how a 210lb Ali might have shaped up against a 240lb Lewis or a 185lbs Marciano. I wouldn't argue strongly against a case for any of those, and I'd throw Larry Holmes into the top 5 mix at the same time.

Tommy's issue mainly related to his chin. I think he was better and quicker than David Tua.

Absolutely re. the Tua comparison. As for his chin, that's also true, but while he got stopped a few times, he also got up to win a few times. I think he'd do well in today's division.
