Australian Fighter of the Year 2010

Post by Marlin »

There are still a few very meaningful fights left in 2010 but we can start thinking about who has been the best this year. I have put a list together of everyone who is realistically in the running:

Danny Green 3-0 (2)*

BJ Flores 24-0-1 UD12

Manny Siaca 22-6-0 KO3

Paul Briggs 26-3-0 KO1*

Michael Katsidis 1-1 (1)

L Juan Manuel Marquez 51-5-1 TKO9

Kevin Mitchell 31-0-0 TKO3

Vic Darchinyan 2-0 (0) [fight scheduled against Abner Mares next month]

Rodrigo Guerrero 13-1-1 UD12

Eric Barcelona 51-17-4 UD12

Daniel Geale 2-0 (2) [no more fights scheduled]

Kariz Kariuki 21-8-2 TKO11

Roman Karmazin 40-3-2 TKO12

Lenny Zappavigna 3-0 (2) [no more fights scheduled]

Fernando Angulo 22-6-0 UD12

Billy Sumba 18-1-1 KO2

Ji Hoon Kim 21-6-0 KO1

Who do you like so far and what results would change your thinking?

if rocky gets up against JMM, he wins hands down, for me. the mitchell fight was supposed to be tough for him, and he iced the guy. he's a class act who isnt afraid to travel to fight the best fights out there.
if that doesnt happen i actually like lenny zappa, for his activity, and willingness to fight hard fights and win them.
danny for me this yr wasted a fight, so he cant be in it.
vic is a bit of a smokey, but i feel the opposition so far wasnt as high as it should/could have been. lookin forward to his next one though
good year for geale to hopefully break through internationally, but think he would have had to do more to get FOY
cant wait for him to take on sylvester.

got to agree about green , i think the flores fight has all the makings of an awsome brawl but he could have swapped his first two fights for another good one. troy ross would have been nice.

shit yeah mate that would make my day if that were anounced shortly after his victory over flores . i dont imagine it will happen though if he doesnt get past flores, itll probably be cameron or retirement if he loss's .
lets just hope he does flores then the pole then uss cunningham than the german but only if the german will come out of his backyard to oz because we all know danny wont be going there again. haha

if Katsidis beats JMM, then it should be Katsidis.. If not
then Vic takes it, if he beats Mares though.. If both losses,
credit should go to Zappavigna..

Agreed, though I'd personally split the award between Zappa and Geale.

If Katsidis beats JMM, it's hands down Katsidis.
If Katsidis, Green and Vic Lose, it should be asplit with Geale and Zappa.

If Rocky wins he should be no.1
If he loses and Vic wins, he will get it.
They both lose and Danny can dominate BJ he will win it, closely followed by Zappa & Geale.
Danny, Vic and Rocky lose Id give it to Gealy.
If Lovemore beats Alvarez where does he fit into all this. Id have him quite high if a few of the other guys lost.

I thought about including Lovemore in the list but he only has the one win so far this year, a SD against the 14-0 Bongani Mwelase and I think Alvarez is a very big ask...

Not an aussie and don't know much about aussie boxing (except that the two big boys Mundine and Green fight bums or legends who are past it) but Lenny Zappavigna what a cracking win to do the south korean in a round, certainly will follow him.

I looked at him also but his level of opposition is no where near the others. I think he is a great prospect but I don't think he's done enough yet to be in the upper echelon..

ATM i'd say Geale but if Rocky wins he would leapfrog him for sure, then Darchiyan. Green and Zappavinga equal as well, Green could go ahead after next wednesday though

If Mundine beats wood............................... he'll go blind?

Frankly even if Green beats Flores I don't think he can be Aussie fighter of the year, I'd still take Zappa and Geale over him after - everyone he's fought this year has been inactive for over a year, one was past his best and one completely shot.

I really hope Katsidis beats Marquez - that would have to be one of the best, if not the best win by an Australian boxer ever, as Marquez is still generally rated P4P #3 and is top 5 P4P in pretty much everyone's list.

Then he skyrockets into calculations, that would be a massive win.

Green definitely can't be it IMO either.

Siaca was as mentioned earlier, past his prime and he was also fighting in too heavy a weight class. If the Briggs fight was the 'what-could-have-been' and not what-it-was, that and the Flores fight (pending quality of fight and result) then Green could have been in serious conversation for fighter of the year. But it wasn't so he's not.

Katsidis gets my vote to this point also.

If by some chance Lovemore beat Alvarez that for me would be a bigger upset than Katz over Marquez, infact it would be the upset of the year and id say he woundnt be out of place near the top of that list

Drawng with a top three pound for pound fighter who is an all time great is still an amazing result. If Katsidis does that, no one else should touch that award. His KO of Mitchell is still probably the best result any of these mentioned fighters have produced at this point.

I really agree with this Jezza. JMM is a HOF fighter, it will be a shame that if Rocky wins, it will be against an old shopworn JMM, but that JMM still beats every other Lightweight currently, so it's valid for Super champion status and will still be a great win on his record.

I have never really been confident of a Rocky win, but i have been wrong and i hope i am on this occasion.

I tend to agree, he was an underdog in the fight in England, and probably everywhere else bar Australia, but the way he won, made people believe that Mitchell was hyped.

I think Karmazin and Ji Hoon Kim were really good wins but fall way short of JMM.

Geales win over Karmazin edges JI hoon Kim, but Zappa makes up for winning a strap at the weight.

I don't think there needs to be a discussion if Katsidis beats JMM.
