Watched Holyfied Vs Foreman on ESPN today......

Post by Newport Daz »

I remember when big George made his comeback in the late 80's how he was ridiculed for being overweight and out of shape and was a danger to himself. Well I watched Holyfield Vs Foreman this morning on ESPN Classic and it struck me how good these 2 are compared to heavyweights of today. I know it's easy to knock today's guys, but these 2 put today's heavy's to shame. They traded bombs round after round with very few clinches and both showed outstanding stamina and endurance.

I remember commentators deriding George as a joke, but the 1991 version of George that fought Holyfield would blow everyone away today including Haye and would give Wlad and Vitali a really tough fight. Considering how George was meant to be fat, he looked in better shape than the majority of today's heavies bar Haye and the Klits. He showed great punch variety, a fantastic chin, a great work rate and a good boxing brain. Holyfield was even better. They just don't make boxers like that any more.

I remember Holyfield saying that he will help Foreman to discover that boxing is not for someone over 40 (not the exact words, but something with that meaning). It is funny in retrospect as Foreman finally retired at 48, and Holyfield at the same age is still fighting (although with style much less suited for old fighters).

Holyfield used a lot of lateral movement in that fight. A some people on these threads refuse to accept that Holyfield did box from time to time.

He was dangerous enough that he not only made Holyfield box and move, but he even got Tommy Morrison to do it. That is the only time that I can recall in Tommy's career that he was focused on winning on points. Amazing how a "fat old man" can make to brawling heavyweights turn into boxers for one fight.

Holyfield wasn't a brawler!!!! He boxed in some fights (he even did it against Valuev for god's sake!) and slugged in others. He adapted his style accordingly.
