Qawi?? He was long gone before Jones was even relevant as a pro.kamicazze wrote:b) why he never fought - dariusz michelewski, de la hoya, nigel benn, chris eubanks, steve collins, gerald mclellan, michael nunn, iran barkley, tommy hearns, frankie lilles, mike tyson, evander holyfield, carl thompson, johnny nelson, guillermo jones, dwight muhammad qawi, and lennox lewis
De la Hoya??? At what weight??? When Jones was a MW and Oscar a LW? Or maybe when Jones was a HW and Oscar a light-middle?
Hearns? Wayyy past his best at the only time their careers and weight divisions overlapped.
And truthfully, Liles, Thompson, Nelson and G Jones were no better than some of the names Jones has beaten, nor would wins over them have added significantly to Jones' resume.

Why is he still fighting now? Is it because he doesn't know what else to do with himself, are there still scores he wants to settle, or does he believe he can win another title?
Is he not concerned that he's taking a fair amount of punishment at an advanced age?

There's a quote along the lines of, 'It is a foolish man who doesn't see that it is the journey and not the destination is what made him happy' which I think is relevant here.MachoMan09 wrote:I'd assess it to be that one. Other than shooting a few hoops, playing with his chickens and laying down a couple of crappy tunes, boxing has been the focus of pretty much his entire life. Without boxing he'd likely toboggan into depression and start to gather dust. So many people wrongly assume that if you achieve your goals and make a fortune you'll be happy forever. This is very rarely the case. The pursuit of the goal is what drives you and keeps you healthy. Accomplishment generates a (very) short lived high. You must then set another set of goals or you will likely crash and burn.jamesmcdonnell wrote:Why is he still fighting now? Is it because he doesn't know what else to do with himself...
Retirement is usually hellacious for fighters, and actually all Roy's wealth probably makes it worse rather than better. He will never need to work again, so what's his motivation for getting up in the morning, other than cleaning the chicken coop?
Roy should try and wangle a media career, work on his diction and presentation skills and become an analyst.

Can you ask him, as reported in the SUN, if he's serious about wanting to fight David Haye???
And what is it about getting beaten up by Calzaghe, Hopkins at light heavy, destroyed at Cruiser by Danny Green that makes him think he deserves the chance

What fights would he have liked to fight in his prime? Which fights were close but didn't materialise? Can he give any details of other boxers avoiding him?

Just in from what was a great night, in the end i didn't get a direct interview with Jones but Steve Holdsworth was the compere for the evening and after talking to him early doors he asked plenty questions that I had prepared, I'm getting the video footage of the evening so I will put the whole thing into text format very shortly. The highlight been the lady who asked Roy's opinion on woman's boxing

For £150 you got a 3 course meal, a signed photo done with Roy and also a signed glove. So all in it wasn't a bad price.orbtastic wrote:This was in Newcastle last night?Hagler2002 wrote:Just in from what was a great night, in the end i didn't get a direct interview with Jones but Steve Holdsworth was the compere for the evening and after talking to him early doors he asked plenty questions that I had prepared, I'm getting the video footage of the evening so I will put the whole thing into text format very shortly. What pissed me off was I went up to Jones just before the meal and asked him to sign my Jones-Ruiz programme and he refused, later announcing that it was a further £50 to have anything signed. Luckily I know the promoter so I got him to go and get it done.
Re: I'm Doing An Interview With Roy Jones Jnr
is that 50 quid in his pocket then?? I wouldn't clean my fcking toilet with it personally under those circumstances....wouldn't be so bad if it was going to charity. Hope the food was good at that price, still the fighter of his generation whichever way u look at it..Hagler2002 wrote:For £150 you got a 3 course meal, a signed photo done with Roy and also a signed glove. Re: I'm Doing An Interview With Roy Jones Jnr
I didn't get a direct interview but Steve Holdsworth who was the compare who I'd spoke to earlier in the evening asked about 5 questions that I had compiled from what had been posted on here.
The whole thing was filmed and I was supposed to be getting a copy of the Q&A to put it into text format but they wanted me to go to their office in Newcastle and do It there as they are thinking about releasing the whole days event on DVD so they were reluctant to give me a copy.
I'll chase it up tomorrow.
