Veeraphol Sahaprom v Daorung Chuvatana

Post by Autobarn »

veeraphol won a split decision over reigning WBA 118 champ daorung in 1995. veeraphol had previously been a 3 weight muay thai champ and beat chuvatana in only his 4th pro fight. he'd lose the title to far more seasoned nana konadu, in a 2 round thriller, before winning the WBC crown a couple of years later, having a long reign that would see him meet ultra aggressive japanese fighters tatsuyoshi (twice), nishioka (4x) and hasegawa.

but, what was veeraphol v daorung like? was it exciting, tough? was it controversial? was it a really bloody good scrap? does anyone have a description of the fight they can give on this thread?

having seen the konadu fight, veeraphol was relying much more on speed and natural talent at this point than later in his career, when he settled down and became much more rounded and technical.

chuvatana would go on to beat konadu, via TD, before getting stopped in a rematch.

You'll be struggling to get that sort of talk going in here, mate.

You get more joy if you started the 1000th Ali thread of the year or something insipid like "Build me a Man!" (Miss Irene loves those ones) or maybe jump on the "What if Morrison gave Lewis AIDS" megathread.

Don't be so jaded Darsky....I never saw this fight, but would love to hear the story from anyone who did. And if I'm not mistaken, this is not the first thread on this subject...though I could not fish it from the depths. Perhaps the thread got controversial and got "the treatment"? Any memory of this subject Dardy? I'm sure it was discussed but I'm comin up empty on the search.

Would love to hear the details of the fight myself..... as an aside...there was another Thai fighter who fought to a draw with Daurong...who dissapeared after his title shot for around 8 years but seemed destined to win a title at the 118 pounds division Lahtkin CP Gym ..I think this was his name...any information on what happened to this guy?

a big achievement, to win a version of a world title (WBA) that early. obviously veeraphol wasn't truly ready to be champ, hence the KO loss to konadu in the next fight (though veeraphol dropped konadu heavily in the first, succumbing suddenly in the 2nd). 2 years later he was much more rounded, and he put on that pair of masterclasses vs tatsuyoshi in japan for the WBC title.

A lot easier to put on masterclasses against a shot tatsyuyoshi with eye problems so bad he shouldn't even have been fighting anymore, than it is against a past prime but still at that point very good Konadu.

I have an 11 (?) disk set of veeraphol's fights, this is on it but I haven't got round to watching it yet. Will dig it out and do so.

can you tell me how a 4-fight pro - any 4 fight pro - is going to put on a masterclass vs a seasoned, hard fighter like konadu, please? it's impossible for anyone at that stage of their careers.

don't see what the problem with tatsuyoshi is. he was champ (WBC 118) and one of the biggest names in asian boxing at the time, in spite of his poor defense and the damage he accumulated. mayweather gets credit for what he did to gatti, and what veeraphol did to tatsuyoshi is similar.

+1 - Exactly right -

And Veerahphol was a very solid champion. In his prime he would be a champion today still.

i think veeraphol was truly exceptional vs tatsuyoshi (both fights), adan vargas and ricardo barrajas - dangerous fighters, all, when veeraphol had become a rounded pro.

and some of his fights vs nishioka (who went on to make 5 defenses at 122) and hasegawa (went on to make 10 defenses at 118 and guns for 2nd world title soon) are absolute classics. veeraphol-nishioka 3 and hasegawa 1 are non stop punch fests that get hotter and hotter to the bitter end.

Not a division that I know a lot about. How high would you guys rate Sahaprom as compared to the all-time top bantamweights? Is he close to being Top 10? I did a list for fun awhile back; I think I rated him #14. Does that sound about right?
