Re: Dan McGoldrick 1913-1928
Better check my family tree to see if Dan McGoldrick is my great-grandfather too!

Can you imagine similar thread in 50 years about Holyfield... and suddenly hundreds of people claiming "he is my great-grandfather"?Bladder wrote:Better check my family tree to see if Dan McGoldrick is my great-grandfather too!

If I'm not mistaken, there was a McGoldrick boxing in the recent Commonwealth Games in Delhi.

Yes, the Welsh boxer won bantam silver ..... haven't heard if he's been upgraded to gold yet after the victor failed a drugs test.Cap wrote:If I'm not mistaken, there was a McGoldrick boxing in the recent Commonwealth Games in Delhi.

But please don't tell me that his great-grandfather is Dan McGoldrick!

Re: Dan McGoldrick 1913-1928
Here is something interesting for you; not only was Dan McGoldrick my great grandfather on my mother’s side but Val Harris was my great grandfather on my father’s side. Dan McGoldricks son Frank married twice. Franks first wife Winifred had a daughter named Elizabeth and she is my mother. This marriage didn’t last and Frank McGoldrick then married Helen and had a son James.
Val Harris also known as Reginald Palmer came from Ireland and married Ada Patterson they had 11 children. Their daughter Mary had a son called Frederick who married Elizabeth McGoldrick. I am the daughter of Elizabeth and Frederick and I have two older sisters. Thus Dan McGoldrick is my great grandfather as is Val Harris.

Hi to everyone interested in Dan Mcgoldrick the boxer. My father Frank Mcgoldrick used to talk about Dan from time to time. My father said Dan Mcgoldrick was his uncle and told me he was heavy champion of Scotland. He also mentioned Dan had fought Bombardier Billy Wells, Victor Mcglagen amongst others. My father also did a bit of boxing. I don't know if he was that good to be honest but any man that gets in to a boxing ring has to have a certain amount of courage and my father certainly had that. I wanted to put my niece Jane right Dan isn't her great grandfather. Her great grandfather was called James Mcgoldrick whom I was named after. He also did a bit of boxing I was told but only at a amateur level. My father was a coal miner the same as Dan and also came from Airdrie. The coal dust eventually killing him by destroying his lungs.
When reading about Dan & how he used to work down the mines & continued with his boxing career it filled me with pride & humility. I don't think anyone could do both nowadays. I just shows how tough a man he must have been. I would love to hear from any Mcgoldrick's who are descended from Dan as no doubt we will be related however distantly. I would also hope that Jane my niece, can get in contact with me as I would love to hear from her. As I said I would love to hear more about Dan & if any of my relations from the Airdrie, Coatbridge area which to contact that would be great. Just one other thing Mcgoldrick In Irish gaelic means proud & fierce.

I haven't been on the forum for a few years and I have just noticed this post saying your grandfather was frank, son of the boxer dan mcgoldrick. I am sorry to disappoint you but your grandfather may have been called frank but he was not the boxers son. I know this because frank was my father and he was married to eileen. they had 9 children and none of them were called james, so sorry you are wrong about your connection to dan (or frank).

To jimmybhoy
I am dan mcgoldricks grand-daughter. I was born in airdrie on his birthday (3rd March)He died when I was 4. My father, frank was one of dan's 8 children and sadly is no longer alive. frank married eileen, the love of his life and had 9 children - 5 boys and 4 girls. There are 8 of us still alive ( some still in airdrie). My father frank followed in dans footsteps and did some boxing. he also was a coal miner working in both bedley and cardowan collieries.
If you would like any further information -post fiercepride (my brother)
please put your neice jane straight - dan was not her great grandfather. She seems a bit confused!
