Calloway to fight Nicholson in Iowa

OSCEOLA, Iowa — If Jason Nicholson was a southpaw, Rob Calloway wouldn’t step back in the ring less than a month after taking one of the worst cuts of his career.
Fortunately for Calloway, the “Native American Nightmare” swings from the right side and will take on St. Joseph’s own at about 9:30 tonight at Lakeside Casino and Resort in Osceola, Iowa.

Calloway (41-3-1 with six no-contests) fought Uzbekistan’s Ruslan Chagaev in Detroit on Oct. 5 before a national audience on Showtime. The fight, which ended in a third-round technical draw, left Calloway with a bloody cut above his left eye after a head butt. The cut required 17 stitches following the bout, but 19 days later, Calloway said he’d return to the ring to fulfill a fight arranged prior to the Showtime bout.

“It’s a little early I admit it, but the style of opponent has to come into play,” Calloway said. “The right-hander that comes right at you, I can move around and not get hit. The guy I fought was a left-hander, where this guy’s a Midwesterner, and a tough guy, but a right-hander that comes at you. And I do well against a fighter like that.”

Calloway said he made the decision this week to go on with the scheduled fight, which will be the main event at the casino. His local doctor put liquid stitch, a skin adhesive, on the cut above Calloway’s left eye to deter it from opening again against Nicholson. Calloway downplayed his appearance after the Chagaev fight and said he was in good enough shape to take on Nicholson for the third time.

“The last fight wasn’t really that hard on me,” Calloway said. “I really didn’t take many punches until the last 30 seconds of the third round. Other than that, it wasn’t a tough fight, and I’m in good shape. My head held up really well.”

Nicholson (20-12 according to Calloway) lost both previous fights against the current WBF intercontinental champ. The last bout was Nov. 10, 2000, which ended in a third-round knockout. Calloway won a six-round unanimous decision Oct. 1, 1998 and will try to beat the former ultimate fighting champion for the third time.

“After this fight, I’m taking off for the Thanksgiving holiday,” Calloway said. “I’m hoping to get out of any cuts or abrasions, and we’ll start setting up our schedule for next year.”

OSCEOLA, Iowa — Rob Calloway won an eight-round unanimous decision late Friday night over Jason Nicholson at Lakeside Casino and Resort.
The St. Joseph native and WBF Intercontinental champion won every round and beat the left-handed Nicholson for the third time. Calloway (42-3-1 with six no-contests) won by a third-round knockout Nov. 10, 2000, and won a six-round unanimous decision Oct. 1, 1998.

Calloway said everything went perfectly in his last fight of the year.

“I just danced and used my jab,” Calloway said. “That was my thing, throw a lot of punches, a lot of quick, fast punches, and move. It was a good fight, and I knew I could get through it without taking a lot of punches.”

Calloway said his next bout would likely be a defense of his WBF title in late January, but that the details were still being worked out. He added that he would not step into the ring again until next year.

I also have a report from ProBoxing Update which backs up your data.
Unfortunately the Iowa boxing commission reported it as an “exhibition” on their bout sheet.
We would have to get an addendum from them listing it as an “official” fight in order to unlock the show & enter the result.
BoxRec. does not list exhibitions.

This wasn't an exhibition, they did not wear headgear and both wore 10oz. gloves. I will try to contact the Iowa commission.

Thanks

Does it fall under the classification of No-Decision, like some of the other bouts on Calloway's record?

No, it wouldn't.

The promoter that made those No-Decesion fights, made them without Team Calloway knowing. That promoter has since been fired. Rob Calloway only fights real bouts. As you can tell the No-Decesion fights ended by Calloway knocking out those opponents. ( So I guess a decesion was not needed since Rob put them to sleep! )

I had a fighter n that card and Nicholson knew it was an Exhibition, that is why he did not throw any punches at Calloway's cut. The fight was a slow motion dance. It was an exhibition by all rights.
