A first for Calzaghe?

Can anybody confirm (because I'm pretty sure) that Saturday was the first time ever that any part of a Joe Calzaghe fight has been broadcast on terrestrial television? This is why he could walk down Oxford Street and not get stopped or looked at, not much anyway.

Hatton could be earning double for the Tszyu fight if it were being shown on Prime Time ITV drawing in 15 million + (having built up a fan base of course) the advertising revenue would go through the roof.

The Woodhall and Delaney fights were both on BBC for sure Goz.

I thought he started on ITV when Warren was still there? I could well be wrong, but I certainly remember him sitting in the ITV studio talking bollocks afer a Robin Reid fight (possibly the Pretorius fight?). That doesn't necessarily mean he was fighting on ITV though, I suppose.

Yeah, BBC picked up the rights for £1 according to allegedly.

Ok, never knew that. Makes sense though, it's in FW's own interests to build the fan base for his fighters.

In fact letting them get to 25-0 and even winning their first 'world' title on terrestrial then pinching them for Sky might prove more profitable.

Delaney was live on ITV, I think there might have been one or two fight before that where a part of Calzaghe was shown.

Yes, Woodhall vs Calzaghe was shown complete the week after.

Allegedly owes the fans bigtime, he's mainly to blame for the current state of affairs. In all fairness Matchroom/Ringside have been pretty good with what they have served up in recent years, always competitive matches while SN put on mismatch after mismatch, TBA's all over the shop.

Of course not. Sky are now losing interest in British Boxing. Due mainly to the pisstaking of SN in my opinion with their matches. How many times have they announced a fight card with TBA down one whole side? Countless times.

Sky seem to be picking up more US coverage which is good, I just wish they'd stick with the US commentary. Would save them money aswell as they wouldnt have to fly Watt & Smith over there and the sound team etc.

Personally...i thought it looked a bit like Frankie showing his wares on TerresTV...First with Amir...then with Hatton doing a bit of broadcasting and of course the JC fight(brief highlights)....thought SN contract with SSky was up soon????...maybe he`s angling for the "real" tv vote????

im pretty sure I saw JC fight on the BBC against a scottish super middleweight, he won in the 7th or 8th round.

Calzaghe was on ITV fighting before he was WBO champ - I saw him win a fight on ITV one Saturday night in April 1996.

I dislike the TBA aspect but what really pisses me off, and this has happened several times in the last 12 months around featherish, welter and light-middle, is where there are two decent boxers at the same weight both looking for an opponent when the public and they themselves would be better served by replacing two mismatches with one good bout. It's like they're waiting until everyone's a PPV star off the back of lighter Polish guys before they consistently make good matches. Allegedly.

Yes, in retrospect that was stating thebleeding obvious but I take a look at the upcoming UK cards for a US-based website every week around this time and the number of times this happens is ridiculous. I know to say that they seem to me to be taking the piss is going over ground that has been covered before but it's a frustration that crops up for me at least on a monthly basis.

In the theory the greatly reduced number of TV dates should lead to increased competition between promoters and better matches being made to get those dates. In theory anyway......
