mike tyson sparring prospect mike williams in 86?
Apparently heavyweight prospect mike williams in 1986 gave a rooney trained tyson hell in sparring . Is this true?
Re: mike tyson sparring prospect mike williams in 86?
Is that the Mike Williams that Tim Tomescheck filled in for?

Re: mike tyson sparring prospect mike williams in 86?
According to the summer '87 issue of the long-since-shelved 'Boxing Scene' magazine, Mike Williams made quite a name for himself as a sparring partner for Mike Tyson. It didn't exactly state that Williams had given Tyson 'hell', (at the time, it was Oliver McCall who was usually reported in the press as being able to do this), but certainly Williams was not one of the numerous hired hands who ended up being separated from their senses by Tyson during training camps. Williams's spirited showings again Tyson in sparring, as well as his unbeaten record at the time and a recent knockout of James 'Quick' Tillis, enhanced his status as a solid prospect to watch. The 'Boxing Scene' article even compared him to a young George Foreman. A close decision loss to Tim Witherspoon, and then a crushing stoppage at the hands of Buster Douglas - who destroyed Williams with a thumping jab - finally exploded any notion that Williams would one day become a blockbuster opponent for Tyson. He never came close to title contention again, unless you count his role as Union Cane in 'Rocky V'.

Apparently he'd kd Tyson in sparring and when asked, Tyson (or his management, can't remember which) said..."whatever they're writing, run with it. It'll make a future fight much bigger"

I don't believe that! Giving Tyson competitive sparring is one thing, but handling a peak Tyson with ease is a different matter entirely!bluebeard2010 wrote:According to mike williams himself . Back in the day, a book was kept of all of Tyson's sparring partners & they would write comments about their experience.
HBO commented on this back in the day. One of the comments left by a sparring partner after just one session read "$500 per week is not enough. "You could not pay me enough to spar with this guy every day. I want NO part of Mike Tyson!"

Well mike williams told journalists that he gave tyson so much trouble in sparring in 1987 that he got the sack.Rocky Balboa wrote:I don't believe that! I remember Williams was named as being a huge prospect by Ring magazine, big muscular bloke but never fulfilled his potential. Not heard the story about Williams and Tyson but many top fighters get worked over in sparring by fighters thought to be 'below' them. Lots of reasons why, they are out of shape, they wear big gloves and headgear and they aren't in there to knock them out, its meant to be to prepare and work on moves. Brit Glenn McCrory sparred several hundred rounds with Tyson and was never floored, Glen was only a cruiserweight and its been said he held his own with Tyson. If they fought for real Glen wouldn't last 60 seconds.

Willams was prospect of the year in The Ring iirc.
He had a body builders physique and really looked the part.
What happened to him? He seemed to just disappear...

I think Busert Douglas happened to him, if I'm not mistaken.
Re: mike tyson sparring prospect mike williams in 86?
After defending his cruiserweight title against someone or other, Glenn looked into the camera and said in all seriousness "Mike Tyson, I'm comin for ya". I laughed my head off for a moment then considered the hideous mess Glenn would have been in if they ever foughtControversial wrote:I remember Williams was named as being a huge prospect by Ring magazine, big muscular bloke but never fulfilled his potential. Wouldn't pay much attention to sparring stories as a guide to how a fight would go. Tis nothing but just shite for us to talk about, is all
