unfair to exclude Olympic Trial qualifiers from natl comp

Post by derrick james »

i have a question what do you suggest the fighters to do for thew next 9 months? Trainning get very boring without a set fight. there were 6 of the 10 champion for pal that are number 1 ranked fighters this 2010 year. with these kids not being able to fight in the US Championship this means they will not be on the national team so international fights are out, what about fighting local lbc fights thats out . so what are they to to.i understand that everyone should have a chance. i have a fighter that has qualified . i think they should give the fighters option.

Nobody is being excluded. The selection procedure even envisions boxers who won the PAL boxing in the other qualifiers EXCEPT the last chance qualifier.

i was told by Errol Spence that they were not allowed to fight in any of the qualifiers. i spoke to another level 4 coach and called Dan Cambell and he said that it is true.

Dan Campbell has not been national coach since 2008. There is nothing in the Olympic Selection procedures that indicates that those boxers winning the National PAL are excluded from trials qualifiers other than the last chance qualifier.

I was wondering how this was gonna play out. Obviously you cant just exclude the PAL winners from the US championships because this wouldnt provide them with a means to stay at number one and continue to recieve their stipends and other benifits. But even if they give the PAL winners a bye to the quarters, they are still gonna eliminate one person from being able to make the trials through the USA's. Unless of course USAB stipulates that any person elimined in the quarters by a PAL champion will get that 4th team trials spot... Anybody know what they are gonna do with that situation which is sure to occur?

Derrick, if you want the best clarification. You should call or email the national office and I'm sure they can clear up any confusion for you. The selection procedures change for every Olympics so those that were in place earlier aren't necessarily what is happening this time around.

You can also read the 21 page qualifying document on the USA Boxing web site. No one is being banned from the U.S. Championships or the National Golden Gloves...
