He has not fought since 2007 after dropping a 12 round decision in a 4 man IBF elimination tournament against Eddie Chambers and had to have surgery on a dettached retina if my memory serves me correctly.

I think anyone appropriately maladjusted can turn out to be a good fighter. MAB's a case in point: a well-off, classically middle-class (in the Weberian sense) kid who went to law school, with (apparently) a savage temper & a vicious streak a mile wide= multiple world titlist.

His parents split and he and is mother came to England 10 years ago, moving to Hampstead Garden Suburb. Check out rightmove for property prices there, its as expensive as you'll find in London.

After some trouble with the police, a probation officer sent him to see Johnny Spencer (Finchley Amateur Boxing Club). The rest, as they say, is history...

I'm pretty sure (from memory) that James' dad was a builder and bought a big house that needed a lot of work doing. I'm not sure his upbringing was ultra posh; his dad may have had a few bob but that's that. James Hare was a very capable boxer though, in any case.

Agreed. I think the reason it is rarer for boxers to come from that sort of background is that rich kids have easier ways to make a living, and also that those from dirt poor backgrounds often have more drive to succeed when the going gets tough, and boxing is about as tough as sports come.
