Toks Owoh = heavyweight?
Just looked up one of my old favourites, Toks Owoh, and saw he weighed 211lb for his last fight! He used to be a wiry super-middle - did anyone see his last fight? If so, what did he look like, and how did he look? I simply can't imagine him as a heavyweight.

He looked rather chunky from what I read, but showed touches of his old class.
Waste of talent Toks, used to have fun chatting with him at Kronk St Pancras about 8 years ago. But, and I don't mean this nastily, was just his way, but he was a real talker and he did like to go on about himself. Had a nasty side to him though in sparring and could whack a bit.
I remember being in dressing room before he boxed Glen Johnson and he was running around handing tickets out... lacked focus and I remember thinking 'you're going in with a guy whose hung tough for 11 rounds against Hopkins and others like Ottke and Sheika, and you're up and down the stairs worrying about tickets!'
Got schooled that night, Johnson was excellent, and Toks didn't come back from it.

The wife and i sat in the middle of Toks many mates the night he lost to Sheika.
We were the only white faces in that block of seats, because for some reason ...people were coming to their seats just before the main event and not wishing to claim their seats from the guys there keeping them warm.
We managed to chat with a very dissapoined Toks after his fight. He, and all his supporters, were fantastic and great fun.
I always kept an eye out for him at shows and in the BN.

Yeah he was down to fight Richie Woodhall after Richie had lost to Calzaghe and he was really up for that fight, but Woodhall pulled out citing a back injury and that was that.
Toks lost fights after that and was never the same. Shame as he did have some talent. Bit too reliant on his power and strength though. Like I say, used to have a laugh in the gym with him. Funny guy.

I liked him too, might have the talent to get a few wins.
Re: Toks Owoh = heavyweight?
In hindsight, and it is always easy to be wise in hindsight, Owoh vs Glen Johnson is a great lesson in how to ruin a prospect.

Yep, but no-one quite knew how good Johnson was going to become, but to be honest, Toks was a livewire and had been shouting out Calzaghe at ringside after Joe's fights. Case of 'okay, let's see how good he is' perhaps.

It's crazy looking back from the distance of a few years, but Johnson beating Owoh was actually considered an upset at the time! Also Toks was doing a lot of self-hyping and calling out Calzaghe and that was actually viewed at the time by some as a live fight.DIRT SUGAR wrote:He looked rather chunky from what I read, but showed touches of his old class.

As for where he is now, it's the proverbial "if he was going to make it, he would have made it by now", so I can't see him doing much as a 38yo HW, but I'll always have a soft spot for him.

Funny, i was thinking of Toks Owoh the other day when i read Yassine El Maachi calling out the other light middles, reminded me of Toks calling out everyone and then running into Glenn Johnson.
Jimmy Colas is kind of a poor mans Glenn Johnson style wise as well
