Interesting Fights On Saturday Night

I haven't done my interesting fights topic for a while and even though nobody is bothered here goes

I noticed how solid the undercard of tomorrow nights Lamon Brewster-Andrew Golota is, i have been critical of Don King in the past but the guy consistently puts on strong, value for money shows with good matchups.

The main event is intriguing, will Golota crack again? Will Brewster's big heart and decent left hook defy the odds and retain his belt? But the main support bout pits Australian hard hitting Light Heavyweight Paul Briggs against unbeaten Polish dangerman Tomasz Adamek 28-0 (20). Adamek is an unknown quantity and has no real names on his record apart from the usual suspects like Oliver Beard, Andrei Kiarsten, Varuzhan Davtyan and recent Macarinelli foe Ismael Abdoul who took Adamek the full 8 last time out. Briggs 23-1 (17) who went into a mini exile after stopping unbeaten Stipe Drews last August re-appears under the guidance of new trainer Jack Mosley in this match for the vacant Light Heavy WBC belt. I don't know how good Adamek's chin is as he has never been tested but he appears to pack a bit of a punch and Briggs is no stranger to the canvas. I still pick Briggs via mid to late KO.

At Light Middleweight Alejandro Garcia looks for a rematch with previous conqueror Travis Simms in a WBA Interim matchup with Rhoshii Wells over 12. This match is also a return as Garcia stopped Wells to leave the only blemish on his 19 fight record, Wells bounced back to KO decent Santiago Samaniego last time round and also holds wins over Angel Hernandez, veteran campaigner Leonard Townsend and Leigh Wicks back in London in only his fifth fight a few years back. Garcia himself is 28-1 with his only loss coming via left hook to the improving Travis Simms on the big Don King fight card back in 2003. He has also stopped Samaniego and six rounds earlier than Wells, but no other real wins of note and a possibly inflated record. I pick Wells to find him out, probably via a decision.

At Cruiserweight American puncher Kelvin Davis takes on Panama veteran Guillermo Jones over 10, Davis the IBF title holder will surely be aiming for Mormeck and a unification holds a 21-2-1 record with 16 KO's. He smashed away Ezra Sellers last time out and has split wins over Louis Azille and Arthur Williams but has been unanimously beaten by Wayne Braithwaite victim Ravea Springs and stopped in 11 by puncher O'Neill Bell who himself meets Dale Brown on Friday night. Jones in turn fiddled about Johnny Nelson to a draw three years ago and is coming off a loss to unbeaten Steve Cunningham, he has a reasonable stoppage ratio but i expect Davis to narrowly eek home on points.

What does anyone else think about these fights?

Suprised the Davis is fighting Jones, this one I missed completely. Steve, whilst I think Davis will win, I heard Jones got jobbed badly by Cunnigham so perhaps the judges might be leanient towards him - it also shows that Jones has more left than just what his record here suggests (cause it just has a L next to his name).

I also think Briggs will win, I have seen him a few times and been impressed - so impressed that I don't want to see Woods vs Briggs untill it is necessary. That will be a Glen Johnson esque struggle.

Garcia vs Wells could be interesting, whilst the KO was kind of controvesial (although not really) vs Simms, Simms was definately exposing Garcia as an overated fighter.

However, you know the saying about rematches - 9 times out of 10 it is repeat over revenge. However, as I don't know much about fight 1 I cannot really pass judgment. If Garcia was winning at the time of the stoppage then I think he will get a points win. If it was Wells winning at the time of the stoppage - then it will be Wells getting revenge.

As to the fights, I think Garcia -- although over-rated -- just hits too hard for Wells. I've only seen Rhoshii (is that how you spell it?) fight once, but he just didn't look to have the athleticism or solid fundamentals that I think you need to outbox Garcia. Of course, now I've said that, he's gonna go out and chin Garcia in like three rounds.... I'd love to see this one, actually. It's has the potential to be a very tough boxer/puncher match up.

The Briggs fight is another one I want to see. I've only read of Adamek, but Briggs has looked either sensational or shockingly vulnerable whenever I've seen him. A couple Aussie friends of mine are real high on him though -- this might be where we find out if he's Jeff Harding Mark Two. Or like, Guy Waters Mark Two.

I think they should rename Cruiserweights Heavyweights, and call Heavies the "Fat fornicate Weight". And I'll pick the (former? Interim? In Recess? Emeritus? Intergalactic? Planetary?) IBF champ to drill the former Light Middle late. Is it a matter of record that Mr Jones was pumped full of 'roids for the Johnny Nelson fight? If so I may flip-flop on that one too.

Anyway, bloody good card this. No real blinding talents but fornicating good matchmaking. Oh, and not that I care much, but I reckon Lamon will either get outboxed by Golota in a dull fight, or just stick around until The Big G either runs out of gas and fouls or collapses from a left hook.

That is true, he got knocked down in his fight before last against a fighter not really going anywhere in Jesus Ruiz yet bounced back to destroy Stipe Drews. I have seen a lot of Briggs and i really like his style, he has moved onto the world scene after more or less dealing with everyone on the Aussie scene and must be commended for that, his only loss which came very early in his career appears to be through a lack of experience. He had a bit of a struggle with the tough Adrian Bellin but came through and also dismissed Daniel Rowsell early on and Rowsell had been campaigning at Cruiserweight previously.

The punch he caught Glenn Kelly with was a peach and that was when Kelly was still half decent, not the shell that David Haye fought and Briggs best fight to date for me was his one sided beating of Jorge Castro, he had Castro disorganised and even in trouble at times in the fight and looked good that night. Briggs isn't a guy to duck the best fighters and has previously called out Clinton Woods, i think it would be a great fight should it happen.

Golota is bookies favorite - 4th time lucky? He's no doubt lucky to be getting four shots - at three of the weakest heavyweight "champs" in heavyweight history no less.
Don King is just determined to get this man a title....

I'm thinking Golota might not implode here, as he's got all the height and weight advantages. Shouldn't be intimidated by the American at all, you'd think.
But Brewster showed heart beating Wlad, and maybe that'll be enough to upset the mentaly fragile Pole?

Garcia was very unlucky to lose his title. He looks a decent puncher, and I'll take him to repeat the win over Wells.

The Aussie is an exciting banger - anything could happen, but I think he'll nick a points win in a tough fight.

Big night for Polish boxing - they might have two world champs by tomorrow morning.

Just thought i'd add that after reading some post fight reports it sounds like the better boxing Brown was jobbed.
