Erin McGowan is not Australia's first female world champ
Fightnews is saying so, but it was Sharon Anyos, wasn't it?

(PS What happened to Anyos, anyway?)

Re: Erin McGowan is not Australia's first female world champ
She was definitely a champion, last I heard she had a baby on the Gold Coast.
Re: Erin McGowan is not Australia's first female world champ
Sharon was WIBA and WBC Female Featherweight Champion.
Re: Erin McGowan is not Australia's first female world champ
Correct Brute, I can recall claiming that Sharon Anyos was our first female world champ. in another thread some time ago Oliver. http://boxrec.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f ... s#p2624451

She had 2 boys 3 years ago & another 10 months agoMarlin wrote:She was definitely a champion, last I heard she had a baby on the Gold Coast.
Her dad Les had to give up training boxers, so he could toilet train them.
At the rate she's going, she'll soon have a cricket team

Not only that, but I believe at the time she was Australia's only world boxing champ, any weight or gender?dberry wrote:Correct Brute, I can recall claiming that Sharon Anyos was our first female world champ. in another thread some time ago Oliver. http://boxrec.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f ... s#p2624451

Interesting fact, assuming it's correct, sounds right though (counting big three only).

Since the above comment. Les told me the 10-month lil' fella is in hospital due to hole in his heart.AntonS wrote:She had 2 boys 3 years ago & another 10 months agoMarlin wrote:She was definitely a champion, last I heard she had a baby on the Gold Coast.

Which, naturally, Sharron & family find extremely hard to handle, albeit surgeons are confident he'll be OK........I certainly hope so.

Tszyu, Peden, Green, Mundine and Darchinian all held WBA, WBC or IBF titles at various times during her championship years.oliverfennell wrote:Not only that, but I believe at the time she was Australia's only world boxing champ, any weight or gender?dberry wrote:Correct Brute, I can recall claiming that Sharon Anyos was our first female world champ. in another thread some time ago Oliver. http://boxrec.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f ... s#p2624451

Re: Erin McGowan is not Australia's first female world champ
I was thinking of late 2005. I was actually in Oz at the time and I seem to remember that was the angle about her. Sure she may have overlapped with some male reigns but there was a time when she was the only Aussie world champ. I think Vic had an IBO title at the time, but yeah, it was referring to major world belts. Tszyu, Peden and Mundine's titles were all before that, and Green's WBA belt came later.Brute wrote:Tszyu, Peden, Green, Mundine and Darchinian all held WBA, WBC or IBF titles at various times during her championship years.oliverfennell wrote:Not only that, but I believe at the time she was Australia's only world boxing champ, any weight or gender?dberry wrote:Correct Brute, I can recall claiming that Sharon Anyos was our first female world champ. in another thread some time ago Oliver. http://boxrec.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f ... s#p2624451

Re: Erin McGowan is not Australia's first female world champ
Just looked at her record again and her previous titles were minor world belts, so when she won the WBC in Oct 2005, that definitely made her the only world champ in terms of major orgs.
Re: Erin McGowan is not Australia's first female world champ
The WBC still recognise Anyos as champion.

This is not correct for women boxing ... WIBA was definitely a major belt in 2000.oliverfennell wrote:Just looked at her record again and her previous titles were minor world belts, so when she won the WBC in Oct 2005, that definitely made her the only world champ in terms of major orgs.

Oh OK. Didn't know that. Assumed women's boxing followed the same "big 4" as the men.computerrank wrote:This is not correct for women boxing ... Have a look at Layla Ali's record and see the main outfits.

I'd rather see her without her outfits.Brute wrote:Have a look at Layla Ali's record and see the main outfits.

Hmm, admittedly I haven't seen here for a good few years now, but she was sweet in her "prime".
Re: Erin McGowan is not Australia's first female world champ
She is not really old, but I could not see a 33 year old woman expecting her second child wearing the sort of clothes she wore while she was boxing.
