Paul Applebey post-fight comments

Post by doctorboxing »

I was very disappointed to hear Paul saying that he thought he deserved the decision and thought he had done enough "in his home country" after a fight he clearly lost.

Scotland doesn't have the best of reputations for awarding decisions to away fighters and this shows that the situation in general is so bad that boxers themselves believe they have to do less to win a fight when they are on home turf. Do they not realise that each round should be scored alone with no bias to where a fighter is from or where they are fighting?

Thought the same thing to be honest, he knew he lost the fight you could tell by his face at the final bell, worrying loss as the fight with Burns looked virutally set had he won Saturday. If that was not enough to push him onwards to victory not sure what would be.

Yeah I thought the same, he was dominated by long shots the whole fight and just couldn't deal with the guys reach. I couldn't believe one of the judges gave him the fight :o

To give Paul a bit of the benefit of the doubt, his head was scrambled and he was full of adrenalin / dissapointment when he spoke.

I thought the same until he said "I thought I did enough on my own show to get the win" like he was expecting a home town decision and not that he thought he won it fair and square.

That Hungarian judge was an absolute disgrace - he should never be allowed near a boxing match again. Applebey took an awful beating and I wish it had been stopped, his opponent was too strong for him.

Guys people say things in the heat of the moment the guy has just fought 12 killer rounds, the kid should be given a break I feel, it is also very hard to score a fight that your actually in too!! I know I have struggled in the past as an amateur and as a professional. Let Paul come to terms with what's happened and I'm sure you'll see a different side than the one we all saw on Saturday ;-)

meh. i would like to say I am glad Appleby lost and i don't care how harsh that sounds

they were trying to parachute him into a WBO shot at 130lbs- on what basis exactly?

apparently losing a british title at 126 and doing nothing for two years after, is justification for getting a WBO shot.

meh. i said to my mate i am glad he's losing because it was cynical matchmaking of the lowest order, getting some african over they thought he'd bash up just so Ricky Burns gets a local derby angle for his second 'gimme' voluntary defence.

the whole thing stank IMO, so up yours to the matchmakers and the team who put this fight together and was hoping for a pathetic Burns - Appleby blowout after it. maybe they will be forced to put up a halfway decent and merited matcH

As for Appleby's response after I am not surprised it was a bit off- as far as he was concerned, he only had to turn up and last 12 rounds and a 'world title shot' was his.

moral of the story, don't set up opponents as patsies and fallguys, and don't look beyond them

especially if you're not that good.

Didja not know that, C-P? They've upped the entry requirements, though. I got an offer of a WBO shot last year, at the bottom of my packet of Coco-Pops.

oh, and i will be fascinated to see if that Ghanaian fella gets the shot at Burns, now.

I mean, that fight was basically an eliminator in the form of a WBO Intercuntinental bauble, and if Appleby won he'd go through to Burns

i will be just fascinated to see if the Ghanaian fella gets the shot at Burns. did Warren get options on him maybe like happend with the Atomic Spider?

if not, the question will arise, so Ricky's management, why didn't you give that tall incredibly awkward African a shot, when you were blatantly willing to give the green Appleby one?

Appleby was just after finishing a 12 round fight. Lets give him some leeway here. He seems like a decent lad. Emotions run high after the fight.

he was clearly thrustrated & tired & no way could of assesed the situation.full credit to him for talking :!:

there's nothing wrong in not wanting to concede defeat, but it will sink in & i hope he can pick himself up & bounce back as he has plenty of time.

It is not the "not wanting to concede defeat" that I thought was bad. If he had came out and said "I thought I won easily" or "the hungarian judge scored it correctly" - that would have been the run of the mill post-fight bluster. It was the fact that he genuinely expected that boxing at home would make a difference to the decision that I thought was disappointing.

Yep the expectation that he should have been given an advantage for fighting at home.
Similar to Ricky Hatton's comments after little brother drew to N'Dou I seem to remember?

not quite as blatant a sense of entitlement as hatton, Lenny- now there's a surprise- but very similar, aye.

imo hatton won that fight and jim watt i think it was had him up on his score card aswell.

think matthews actual words were after ndou said he'd give him a rematch in south africa or oz was "if i cant beat u here ive got no chance in your country" so he wasnt actually sayin that he thought he deserved the fight coz of where he was from.

it wasn't 'if i can't beat you here', i don't think.

from memory it was more specifically directed at the judges, 'if they don't give me the decision in my own country...'

All in all, it was a bad performance and a well deserve defeat. His comments are not the worrying thing, it is more he thought he was good enough for a world title shot and produced a performance like that.

I know people have off days, but quality fighters still come out on top.

Paul now needs to knuckle down and get himself back on the domestic scene and winning in style, then come back in a couple of years maybe to fight for the world title if good enough.

I think you should cut the guy some slack. He has given an interview after losing (fairplay)and I dont think he genuinely believes what he said. He was upset and just wanted to believe he did enough to win. Although obviously got beat comprehensively.
