Gonzalez certainly talked a good fight....

Didn't he ever... his fight with Bowe was probably the best example for me of how one fighter had remained in amateur mode while the other had embraced the pro style. Bowe made Gonzalez look utterly inept.

One question on the rankings - how come some have Irish fighters and some don't?
Eg Paul Hyland's there in Super Bantam, Andy Murray isn't in Lightweight....

The build up of that fight (perspex shield between them) was one of the best in recent memory, I remember Bowe throwing a glass at Gonzalez when he kept calling him a "fat cow"

also I remember reading how Shannon Briggs went up to Gonzalez to say hello and the big nutter bitch slapped an astonished Briggs.

after watching him toy with a shot Renaldo Snipes I have to say that I bought into the whole Gonzalez will win stuff also

Thanks Apollo, much appreciated. We have trouble getting information out of the Board as to which Irish fighters hold BBB of C licences - that's the criteria for inclusion. Sometimes we get the info we ask for, sometimes we don't, it's not very satisfactory - we're only trying to do the right thing by the Board's licence holders, after all. We're doing our best to be accurate.

Britain has the two best Boxing mags in the world end of.

Agreed Jon, that was a source of pride to myself and Claude when he was BN Editor, we'd talk about it often when we were off covering fights. I think the British websites are the best too. Not being silly patriotic, but with few exceptions Brits cover boxing better than the rest. Not many overseas writers I rate these days - except The Gilf, of course, but he's from another planet!

That's an interesting one, actually. I wonder what international boxing mags are any good? You know, beyond the Yankee ones we know well.

In terms of English-language, there are a couple in Australia. World of Boxing is a decent read with low production values, and The Fist is better-looking but with shoody editing. There must be one in South Africa, and perhaps Canada. I don't think any other English-speaking countries have a big enough boxing demographic for there to be a dedicated mag.

Just read Graham Houston's column plus his feature on boxing referees in this month's edition of BM and it is a very balanced and insightful read. In his column Houston makes an excellent point on the abuse of Tec Decision. The inconsistency of judges cards, poor stoppages and incompetence handling of fouling has become more pronounced in recent months and it was an issue that was screaming out for a good wise head like Houston, to get to grips with it. I am glad he dedicated his column to the TDec rule and how it robbed Cunningham, I think that particular stoppage annoyed me as much as anything I have seen in the past couple of months.

Also, the photo (p37) of Mayweather, Ortiz and Cortez - says more about that unfortunate ending than a thousand words - great photo.

Borges piece on Adrian Broner was brilliant and Terry Dooley has penned a good feature on the boxing sites, and there is a very well researched piece on Al Bernstein, havent read the rest of the magazine yet, but another top read.

Yes great read - am about to re new myself too. Good to see Terry's got an article in there ( and Ian of course - not read it all yet ) and Glyn gives boxrec another name check

Was great to see Graham Houston rightly calling out Hopkins on his underhand tactics too, saying his latest fiasco sees him lose out on a place with the greats. You'd never see Hagler bail out like that.

Nice to see the very good Eric Raskin writing in there too.

Smith's had plenty of breaks, but has just failed to capitalise on them. I'm not trying to knock him, but that's really the truth of it - there are plenty of fighters who haven't had the opportunities he's had.
