Clinton Woods
Clinton Woods
Whats your thoughts on woods? i think he gets under rated he beat some good names was world champion and he had one of the best chins i have seen of any brittish fighter
Re: Clinton Woods
Some would say that Woods over-achieved and the likes of David Starie (who beat Woods) under-achieved. If Starie was awarded the win against Ottke he could well have gone on a similar run.

Re: Clinton Woods
good honest pro, pleased he achieved what he did. fell short of elite, by his own admission. I dont think he got enough credit for the exciting fights he was in. He fought in some blinders.
Re: Clinton Woods
just a really good pro and great names to have on his record.

Woods was not a bad champion a bit predictable though !

Are you saying the version of Jones Woods fought would have taken Calzaghe in a round?hurlock wrote:woods is very under rated, he boxed roy jones at his best & calzaghe wouldnt of got past the first round.

wood's won a tooth & nail battle against glenn johnson & couldnt win a second v jones it was so one sided due to jones's exellence. it just goes to show how bad he had deteriated to lose by bad ko to johnson in 6-7.

Re: Clinton Woods
Anyone who genuinely watched that fight can clearly see it was actually a forearm smash by Jones Jr that put Calzaghe down so heavily - it was completely unintentional, but it was as clear as day that it was Jones' completely unprotected forearm that connected with Calzaghe, not his glove, so using this as a reference point is ridiculous.hurlock wrote:a shot roy jones had calzaghe down & clearly hurt in the first rd, had that of been his hey day calzaghe wouldnt of made it back to his stool :!:

If Calzaghe had fought Jones Jr at the time Woods did he'd have lost, but no way would he have only lasted a round

Re: Clinton Woods
I thought clinton pulled out the last two rounds in the third johnson fight to deserve it just. (i wouldnt agrue with a draw tho).BIGMARK wrote:Clinton was a good fighter to watch and always seem to give it ago. He never stopped trying when Jones Jnr really went through the gears and his wars Glen Johnson will live long in my memory although i didnt think he deserved the win or draw. I felt sorry for him in the Tarver fight as there was something not right that night but still proberly over achived in his career where he always showed a good work ethic and heart.
Incidently, i thought richard poxin did a great job in the corner that night! "lift your head up clinton, ur the champion..." great advice as Clinton started to feel a bit sorry for himself.
Re: Clinton Woods
When Clinton was going through his best period (IMO) as European Light Heavyweight champion I championed him against all of the leading Light Heavy contenders at the time, barring Jones and Michaelswecki.
So... kind of got bitten on the arse by some US email buddies who remembered my championing when he finally fought Tarver. Such a dissapointment that night. Tarver for me is still one of the most overated champions in recent years.
Despite is nice little run as a world champion. I always wondered just how would he have done had he fought his world title fights as he did as a EBU champion. I don't think he was quick enough to be a slick boxer at World level - but he showed such a dogged attitude as EBU champion, like he wouldn't be denied. No, he wouldn't have beaten Jones - No, No and No.... but he might have edged Johnson instead of (for my money) three defeates. I still think Woods peaked whilst waiting for Jones.

Calzaghe would have schooled any version of Woods, he was far too quick for him.
Woods was strong, had a great chin and was workmanlike. He did very well with the tools he had.
But he was not in Calzaghe's league.
I'll always remember the controversial Johnson win, and how he took apart Crawford Ashley and Rico Hoye.
Seem to remember that was on the BBC? Great fight, I think he might have been the underdog for that one as Hoye was seen as a really strong contender, but Clinton shocked a lot of people that night and finished him early. Lovely man, good fighter......but not a great.
Re: Clinton Woods
Clinton was always one of those guys who just did the best with what he had, by no means a brilliant fighter in any one aspect of the game, he was dogged and brave and had power at a certain level. I think his promoters did brilliantly to get him the fights they did.
Re: Clinton Woods
Clinton Woods did just great, he weren't afraid of any of the big names, any of the hyped names and he kept on training and improving all the time. He weren't a layabout or a bully who threw their weight about in the pubs and clubs. Woods kept his feet on the ground and lost to some really good fighters, (and a great one), drew with an excellent box fighter and beat men who on paper were out of his league. Woods was a boxer to admire and the fact that he kept his feet on the floor and weren't a dick makes him a champion to admire.
Re: Clinton Woods
I admire Woods and think he was a really good fighter, competed with the elite and beat some really good names too!! If he could have had just a little more exposure he could have been massive as he was always in exciting fights. People will look back on Woods career with good memories and a smile on there face cos they got value for money and the guys a gentleman too, I hope his story is ends well I really do. Good Luck Clinton and well done.. ![[icon_wink.gif] ;-)](./images/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif)

I loved Clinton Woods in Coronation street. The on-screen chemistry with Fizz was electric.

Re: Clinton Woods
Clinton Woods was a fantastic boxer and achieved so much that many hundreds of boxers can only dream about.
Fantastic sense of humour and a thoroughly decent bloke - I just wish he could have done better against Tarver and Cloud.
The Cloud fight came too late in my view but I honestly feel the Tarver fight was winnable but so much went wrong in the lead up to that.

Re: Clinton Woods
I was at the Hull Ice Arena when Woods lost in the first defence of his commonwealth s.middleweight title. He was outboxed and outclassed by David Starie. Starie fought the perfect fight against woods. I don't think many people would've predicted Woods coming back at lightheavy, winning the Euro strap, and challenging the then undisputed lightheavy king in RJJ.
IMO he was an overachiever, but truly deserved to achieve what he did.

Re: Clinton Woods
Richard Poxon played a big part in his story guiding him to a world title.
