Who is Joseph Laryea?

Post by mnapatterson »

The British news media reportage was one sided on this particular bout. this is how it was told

In an upset, super featherweight Paul Appleby (16-2, 11 KOs) lost a split decision to Joseph Laryea (14-4, 11 KOs) in a bout for the vacant WBO Inter-Continental super featherweight title. Appleby was a 8 to 1 favorite to win this fight. He hurt Laryea early to the body but the African weathered the storm and dominated with his jabs keeping Appleby at a distance

What is an upset? The British boxer was humiliated from the first ring to the last. The ring doctors surprisingly allowed the bout to travel to the full distance, when it was evident that Paul Appleby is way behind and the blood oozing from his deep cut was just too much.

Joseph Laryea arrived in UK three clear days prior to the bout which in reality only give advantage to the home boxer.

African boxers are never given fair deal in England. I hope this conservative society changes his own method of doing things.

He wasn`t humiliated, he was simply outworked by a tough fighter.

Not sure about outworked. He was just dominated with the jab because of a shorter reach. Why was he not told to work inside considering the success he had to the body? Seemed to me that he tried to box on the outside against the rangier man and so was getting picked off all night. Little disappointed to not see him try to press more but hope he learns from it.

He's probably overrated. IMO, Appleby's heart isn't in boxing. There was even talk about retirement after the Lyndsey fight, and I wouldn't be surprised to see Appleby retire soon.

I've said it before plenty times and I'll say it again - Appleby just isn't really that good. Certainly nowhere near as good as he is hyped up to be.

Dioufy is spot on, didn't look as if his heart was in it on Saturday night and my initial thought after the fight was that Appleby would probably "retire" again.

I was complaining about the way and manner African Boxers are rushed to England three days to a major fight, not taking everything into consideration including the weather. This kind of arrangements give the British opponents unfair advantage at all times.

Surely that's their choice? I doubt they are forced to take the fight. Of course the promoters/managers in England want to give their boxers every advantage, it's up to the managers of the 'African boxers' to secure them a better deal, or plan better.

Just the balance of power in boxing, it's like complaining that the bigger names get more of the purse.

In 99% of cases the ticket buyers and television viewers are there to watch the fighter they are familiar with. Joseph Laryea did well, hope he builds on his success; Paul Appelby is a very capable boxer and was well beaten. I'm glad that Laryea got the deserved decision; there have been fighters from all over the World that have 'won' the bout but the decision is against them.

perhaps my perspective is a bit different as i spent a few months in Accra and have a love for Ghana but i noticed the same...also the commentators reference to 'teak tough' africans was a bit sad....(Teak is a very dark, almost black wood)….have we not got past this sorta bullshit in 2010?

Props to your man tho…..he did very well…appleby just couldn’t get past his jab.

Who is Joseph Laryea? Cynically speaking, probably Ricky Burns next opponet. Used his jab very well and put on a good show so deserves another pay day.

What Laryea has done is now earned himself teh opportunity to no longer only get short notcie for his next fight.
he earned it and that is life.
i am happy he won the fight and got teh decision as it shou dhave abeen a clea unanimous but a win is a win so at least he was not robbed.

you cannot expect him to be given much notyice when he is not yet a headline fighter, he was brought in to lose, so that is the way the sport works, and if you fight your way out of that position and are not robbed a decision then fair play to you.

but an advantage is usually given to one fighter or teh other depoending on who is headlining etc. its a shame and i do not agree with it, sio it was refreshing to see laryea beat a good boxer in appleby who could just not "adapt" a very underated skill in life and boxing.
