Been away for a few months....

Post by jameswilson »

....Ironic maybe that I missed Audley's World title fight due to being underwater, but by the sound of it a good job I didn't see it live. Gutted that I missed Froch hammer Abraham.

Fill me in chaps (don't) on whats been happening in Brit boxing since early September.

Former English champion Scott Lawton has announced his retirement following his defeat to Dewsbury's Gary Sykes in Prizefighter last month. The 34-year-old Lawton dropped a unanimous decision to Sykes, the reigning British super-featherweight champion, and decided enough was enough, in the wake of a crushing European title defeat earlier this year.
Lawton reached an ABA final before turning pro in 2001 and reeling off the wins. By 2007, he could not be ignored and he secured two attempts at the British lightweight title against Jon Thaxton and John Murray respectively but was stopped both times, and he was also stopped by Amir Khan in a crack at the Commonwealth lightweight title.
However, Lawton then made an audacious drop down to super-featherweight and pulled off a career-best victory over Liverpool's Derry Matthews in seven rounds to secure that shot at the European super-featherweight title in his home city of Stoke in February, but his height and reach and stylish boxing skills were not enough to hold off a rampaging Leva Kirakosyan.
Lack of power cost Scott at championship level, and he had a tendency to bust up, but domestically, he was sharp and clever, winning the English lightweight title with a nine-round stoppage of an in-form Martin Gethin in 2008 and scoring other solid wins over Peter McDonagh, Stefy Bull, Roger Sampson and Youssef Al Hamidi as he built up a huge fan-base in and around the Potteries and a career record of 27-7-1 (6).
It was not to be for the likeable Lawton, but he leaves the sport with all his faculties and with his eye very much on the future. "I want to channel all my energy into training boxers and bringing more belts back to Stoke," Scott told The Sentinel.

Best of luck to him with the training; if his lads have some of his bottle they'll not leave anyone disappointed. Lawton didn't have a massive punch but he did have excellent skills, fitness and guts to burn. I was afraid for him v Kirakosyan but he did himself proud; going out v Sykes (a super boxer) is no disgrace at all. He's not been battered about or shown himself up; what a good lad!
