He really did go overboard. I thought his appraisal of him was correct at the time. Seems like there is some crucial element missing though. Shame.

We just had a Colombian named Edison Miranda on ESPN2 who came in 21-0 with 21ko's. He won his fight with veteran journeyman Sam Reese by decision. Looked to have decenet power but terrible footwork prevented him from ever really threatening to hurt Reese.

Carlos Maussa came up recently from Colombia too with a similar record and then laid out Jeff Resto, before coming back to earth.

It's hard to say with these fighters from Venezuela and Colombia, because its clearly easy to get KO's there. But if this guy has been scouted in practice, he's probably at least somehwat legit - but we'll maybe never know if he never gets in a tough fight. He needs another easy opponent like he needs a hole in his head... oh wait :)

Tore thru a group of journeyman and nobodies but then KO'd by the first live opponent he fought, Marlon Starling. The Ring did an article on guys who looked great in the gym but couldn't replicate it in fights. John "The Heat" Verderosa was another.

Mike Williams the finely chiselled heavy who gave Mike Tyson fits in sparring and KO'd James Tillis was another gym champ.

Tye Fields (the 6' 9" perpetual heavyweight prospect from Iowa) won his first fourteen fights in the first round, and hadn't gotten beyond two rounds until Jeff Ford (a former UFC fighter with a crap boxing record) KOed him in about 70 seconds in his 18th fight. Fields' best win to date remains his 2003 UD over a thoroughly disinterested (and foot shorter) Sherman Williams.

Yes I remember those two - Baret was a highly rated Ring prospect at the time.
Verderosa was exposed by our very own Boza Edwards, and another example of the time would be hot prospect John Collins - blasted out by Tony Sibson when he stepped up.

Earl "The Pearl" Hargrove was another classic example.

How about Billy Fox, was 43 wins 43 KO's , before getting stopped by Gus Lesnevich, i think it turned out that some of Billys opponents took dives in the fights arranged by the mob.
