Remember they mooted Ricky Burns to defend vs Matt Zegan?

Post by T.M.K »

Hi all (update on previous discussion here 3 months ago)

remember back in September the word was that Ricky Burns would defend against Matt Zegan in December (the defence which he just came through, against Eversen)? The was uproar on here, and rightly so, due to Zegan not having made Super-Feather in 8 years and because he "lost" to Boris Berg (3-0-0) in September over 6 rounds..... which was then cunningly changed to a draw.... allegedly in the hope of protecting this possible world title shot. Well, obviously the title shot didn't materialise :TU:

However: Zegan still fought this month, under the radar somewhat, and was stopped in the third round of a WBO-European Lightweight title fight against Eduard Trojanovskij (8-0), who has only been pro for a year. Guess you can't change a TKO to a draw

Funny how life works out sometimes.

best wishes,

I saw that result and thought about what a poor opponent he would have been.

I like the original post on this thread and appreciate the point being made. Its a promoter's job to try and make a success of his fighter, particularly when the fighter wins a title and has the opportunity to make some good money, but as badly run as the sport it, it would be a lot worse if these kind of things went unchecked, and opponents like Zegan could be recycling as being a "world title challenger". Others may have a different view. The path to "easiest, beatable challenger" is paved with farces like Herbie Hide vs Damon Reed. There's nothing wrong with fans wanting the best for the sport, and pointing out instances where standards may have dropped too low :TU:

No offence was intended Mr Bellew,

I fear you have taken the "view" of this post from the wrong perspective - my point was more towards cynical and political "business" strategies. Obviously Zegan was mentioned as a possible Burns opponent and everyone thought it was horrendous matchmaking. To add to this fire, there was the controversey of a "loss" becoming a "draw" - which was apparently to keep this possible world title shot as his next fight.

My point here is "well done Team Burns!" (and anyone else involved) for NOT accepting Zegan as a worthwhile challenger - because look what happened in his next fight, where, no matter how many rules could have been "slightly exaggerated", you cannot escape fromt he fact that he got stopped, by a novice!......... I think most would agree that Zegan's two bouts int he latter half of 2010 are hardly the merits of a possible world title challenger.

I wouldn't "rubbish" any professional boxer, but did you not feel ever so slightly "HAHA! You deserved that!" when Luis Santana was finally sunk to the canvas by Terry Norris? Or Lorenzo's WBC fight against Humberto Soto? Sometimes I guess the phrase is "things come back to bite you in the a***" and I feel Zegan's team got their come-uppance.

All in all, it proves everyone was right for him to be dismissed as a potential Burn's challenger!

Just an opinion though,

best wishes
