Originally from Milwaukee, Gus arrived in Australia in 1956 and has been a serious player in Australian acting and boxing ever since.

As a referee, judge, commentator, mentor and compassionate friend to all who knew him, Gus is one of the legends of Australian boxing which was acknowledged with his induction into the Australian National Boxing Hall of Fame.

Gus passed away on Tuesday Dec 7, 2010 and the following will pay tribute

- Arnold Thomas - Friend and curator of the Boxing collection at the National Sports Museum
- Graeme Brooke - To speak on behalf of the Aboriginal community on Gus' support
- Matt Ropis- Former Australian champion on Gus refereeing his debut fight.
- Barry Michael - Former world champion on Gus refereeing his world title win over Lester Ellis
- Hank Stanley - Late 1940's pro fighter, historian and friend of Gus'.
- Peter Maniatis - 4 time Victorian promoter of the year on being mentored by Gus
- Bryan Membrey - Former pro fighter and friend of Gus
- Brett McCormick - Current ANBHOF president on the legacy of Gus to Australian boxing
