Referees Ruining Fights

Post by whicker »

such a shame, for BOTH fighters , and general fans.

When are British Refs so quick to stop fights when the homeboy/promoters favourite is winning?

Especially when the let the same other fighter continue in very similar circumstances.

Phil Edwards was bang out of order :shame: He was looking for an excuse to stop the fight and stopped it without a meaningful punch landing after Ovill got up. Ovill eyes were clear and was ready to continue.

I actually think Phil Edwards is a really good ref but was just premature with the stoppage! Bad night for him, but good luck to Dave Parris who refed his last fight tonight, though he made mistakes he was a quality ref

Its poor. Fair enough the referee's job is to protect the fighters but wheres the justice in the mackenzie stoppage? Its a hard job being a ref in any sort of sport? Football refs are having a hard time in scotland just now. There will always be controversial descisons. Its part of the game. Unfortunatley.

Lads - I've had to tidy this up for legal reasons. This is for your sake, believe me. PM me if you need an explanation.

I don't buy into any corruption conspiracy theories..... but I certainly believe that almost all our refs are grossly incompetent, especially when it comes to timing stoppages.

In the last year we've seen some of the most baffling decisions..... we need to bring over someone from the States to coach these people.

As an away fighter I'd be very nervous about taking any punches, because you just know the referee is looking to dive in there.

The American boys are slating Joe Cortez for his display in the Khan-Maidana fight. It sounds like Cortez bent over backwards to protect Khan.

Bellews fight was probably the worst early stoppage I've seen when the fight is as even as it was. What was the point in letting ovill get up? Degales stoppage wasn't much better. Makes me wonder how promoters are ever going to get full on good match ups because most sane boxers will just know that the ref will end it too soon.

Have to agree with the people on current scene saying that the ref was over protective of khan and made it worse because that was the only poor thing about the fight. Don't know whether I agree that he didn't need it because the ref did help him out when he was most in need.

Is there not a way we can organise a complaint to the bboc about the refs especially about the liverpool bill?

at the end of the day it's better to stop the fight to early than to late but being a ref is a hard job to do ????

The problem is the inconsistency.

What happened between McKenzie going down and being rugby tackled to make the referee change his mind about stopping it?

Why wasn't Bellew stopped after being decked the second time?

We've seen some shocking stoppages recently such as DeGale vs Dilks, Murray vs Thaxton and then that last night.

British refs need to be encouraged to give people a chance to recover rather than jumping straight in. There's no way that you can say McKenzie was in danger of being badly hurt - that's the time to step in. Not being rugby tackled or taking one or two partially blocked punches without responding.

Juan Manuel Marquez would have about 10 KO losses if his fights were reffed by our shower of sh1t officials.

I'm not in favour of human cloning but we need a dozen Kenny Bayless replicas to sort the sport out over here.

all boxing fans should be able to complain to the bbb of c cause i paid to watch the bill in liverpool and im disgusted in all the fights there, sorry the macklin fight was ok but i had it a draw, warren has to much influence on the judges and refs i think. mckenzie head was clear but bellew's head in the 2nd was all over the place he landed hard on the canvas but the ref let it go on it baffles me,then degale hits smith with a peach of a left hook but thats the only clean shot he got hit with in the attack that led to the stoppage then smith says as soon as howard webb jumped in "fook off howard" so his head was clear its a joke we the fans are getting short changed here but degale walks away with an estimated 100 G's in only only his 9th fight,my mate challenged for the british but only got 18 G's were is the justice in that fair enough if degale wins the title in style then warren can pay him 100 G's but not to challenge for it

I'll tell you why mate, I answered al four of his questions walked towards him put my hands up and told him to move!! Watch it again and tell me what were Ovills reactions when he got up?? He did not answer 1 question, DID NOT put his hands up and DID NOT walk forward yet he was alowed to continue, I hit him with a right hand and missed with the second one two.. I needed 1 more to lean him out but I'd rather it finish like that than the guy asleep in all honesty!! Its a business and a sport, I don't wanna see anyone get badly hurt mate and he was blowing badly don't forget that, After my knockdowns I boxed straight away and threw punches!! he didn't and I also feel I won almost every round after the first 2 but hey that is my opionion guys..

Thanks again for the support.. :TU:

I wasn't saying you should have been stopped by any means, I'm just pointing out the inconsistency.

I was at the arena last night, once the fight is uploaded to YT I'll have another look, but from what I saw you put McKenzie down with a hard shot, he got up before you charged at him.

As for whether those punches landed cleanly I can't remember.... McKenzie was tired, but he wasn't out on his feet and in my opinion (and pretty much everyone elses) the stoppage was shocking.

It's becoming a theme in British fights that anyone slightly hurt is waved off, this isn't the amateurs FFS!

I have watched it back mate, I hit him with the right hand on the leap in and miss with the follow op one two, My main point is I answered 4 questions off the ref and did all the instructions he asked for yet Ovill didn't respond to one, Look back at it, Walk forward no response?? hands up no response?? Whats your name?? No response?? I told the ref to move after answering all 3 of them instructions.. But eh it dont matte what I say people gonna have the opinions an there entitled to them but anyone saying I should have been stopped is nuts!! I boxed him as soon as I got up :TU:

I might be biased as I was supporting Smigga, and I hate blaming referees. BUT, I thought he gave DeGale far too many warnings without following through with points deductions, for headbuts and low blows. I was also very annoyed with what I deemed to be a very premature stoppage. Not saying Smigga would have won, but in front of his home fans and with his title at stake, I felt he deserved to carry on. It seems now, that any time a boxer stumbles a bit, the ref jumps in.

I think both stoppages were correct, smigga sorry to say was taking some big punchs and could have been really hurt. mckenzie was gonna get sparked. Saying that would love to see that fight again? bomber v mckenzie was my fight of the night.

Boxing is the world's hardest 'sport' and I personally hate to think of any fighter working and training for weeks, only to be cheated by officials. However I think Bomber makes a good point. The fact is what makes it boxing and not just two fellers knocking the shlte out of each other, IS the rules. If there is/was not the right response to the questions, the ref MUST stop it. Simple as that.

Bomber please don't take my next statement as any sort of dig at you because its not......

But i think the referee almost bought into the hype you bring as a puncher, and almost decided that the opponent couldn't take the knockdown and survive without reason.

If as you say he didn't respond to the 3 questions so wasnt deemed with it, the referee should have waved it off straight at the count..... but something in his head obviously allowed it to carry on only for him to give Mckenzie about 3 seconds to prove his head was/ was not there.

It was piss poor and has left a very sour note on what should be seen as a very good win for yourself, a lot of people are always going to put a black mark against the W i think. Would you ever consider the rematch? to answer the questions im sure many of us have?

i do believe you you would have won the fight afterwards anyway, but do not feel happy with the manner in which it ended at the time.

on a more positive note, a big thankyou for being involved in the fight of the night,

I agree with most of that.

Bellew ought to feel aggrieved at the referee too - because he was denied the opportunity to make a definite statement against McKenzie..... instead of talking about a lad winning having been stuck on his arse twice we are talking about refereeing.

The Smith stoppage was fine, DeGale was starting to tee off on Smigga, it kinda reminded me of the Khan vs Malignaggi fight when the ref made a compassionate decision.

As you've said Tony you've got back to back wins over guys that nobody really wanted to fight, so fair play to you for that, and for answering people's points on here.

The main issue for me with you (and all other Warren fighters) is the lack of activity.... you should be out much more often.

money has everything to do with it,someone in their 9th fight getting 100G's is too much and if money has nothing to with to do it fight your next fight for free then,im not having a go but i think "ye he won the gold medal probably got a huge signing on fee from warren so to he should get pay days like everyone else who is a challenger until he wins the title" then call the shots on wages just my opinion, you dont have to agree with me. and no my mate wasn't a gold medalist at the olympic's but he would give any medalist a run 4 their money in the pro rank's
