Its kind of opposite to the Manny vs Floyd situation... recently when I see Barker fight I think - oh he will lose to Macklin, then when I see Macklin fight "Oh he will lose to Barker"... Neither have looked impressive of late.

One thing is for certain - Sergio Martinez beats them both on the same night.

It would be a really interesting fight if it happened! I see it almost as the opposite to PAC/Mayweather as everytime I see one of them I think he would win but then the other fights and my mind changes. Though in this fight everytime I watch one of these guys I think the other could exploit weaknesses and beat the other one, if that makes sense :) . I had Macklin winning by one point last night he didn't look great but he is much better than that performance

I think the Barker fight should and will happen next. It was a very disappointing performance from Macklin and he needs a higher profile fight now. I would think that Barkers team will be more interested than ever having seen last nights display. I for one am keeping faith with Macklin and think much better days lie not too far ahead.

Possibly, however Barker didn't look too great last time either.

Macklin looked short of ideas and had no real answer to workrate and speed, alarming how badly his face swelled/cut too.

That's two slightly flat performances on the spin for Macklin.

But let's give Varon some credit - he came to win and left Macklin's face the worst i've ever seen.

They earned their purses last night definitely.

barker would pin his ear's back & stand him on his head.

the beat down he took from moore has robbed him from any freshness, he aint better then the fighter who moore beat which he keep's playing down to weight. the guy is a good fighter but not world class.

Darren Barker is nothing special either, in fact, he is less special than Macklin and I still think Macklin would knock him out. Can't see Macklin getting a result against the top guys in the division though. Having said that, he'd beat Sylvester so there is still a chance of him getting a world title. I couldn't see Barker beating Sylvester because he doesn't have the power to stop him.

Totally disagree barker has the potential to go all the way. You have to remember barker boxed whilst needing a hip opp and had not been for a single run for months. Macklin has no excuses what so ever and personally think barker would hurt him. And 14 ko in 22 bouts does not suggest he can not punch the opposite if you ask me!!

Macklin had a chest infection so he does have an excuse. This was known by some before the fight.

Barker doesn't have a lot of snap in his punches. His KO record flatters to deceive.

Chest infection or no chest infection, once you get in that ring you have to fight, and i'm sure once he did the effects of the chest infection were long gone!!!!

The bottom line is he was very poor and extremely lucky to win that fight, I actually thought varon looked the better boxer and more capable of causing the stoppage. If truth be told I thought Macklin looked poor in his last fight as well.

Which leaves the arguement is he overated?

Macklin marks up as easily as anyone I've seen in a while. a slightly tough stare will get him marked up around the eyes.

his form worries me.

Macklin needs a tougher test than these fights he is getting from Allegedly. He seems to rise to the occasion and all his best performances have been in fights where he hasn't been a clear favourite. These fights where he is expected to win easily, he does seem to struggle.

At least that's what I hope it is. The Barker fight will have definitely lost some appeal after Barker's spell out injured and Macklin's poor performances.

I'm back and forth when it comes to Macklin. Didn't rate him at all in the beginning and then thought I saw the odd spark of improvement in a few of his bouts preceding the Barker fight. I'm now back to being less than hopeful about his chances.

Not writing him off completely against Barker, just less optimistic that it'll be the barney I thought it could've been.

By whom? Those who think he's world class are probably wrong, I think he's found his level. For your progress chart to level out at Euro level is still an almighty achievement. Varon was underrated by most, he is not a bad operator, although Felix Sturm pretty much boxed his ears off a few years back. The fight was never going to be an easy night's work.
But surely if your ranked in the top 10 and could potentially getting a world title shot. Surely guys like Rubin Varon should not be giving you as many problems as he did for Macklin.

Macklin has himself admitted he is now in his prime. So if this is it, then too me it's a bit dissapointing.

Barker has better boxing abillity and has consistantly looked better against better opposition than Macklin. Ok in his last fight he didn't look great but to still win after not having great training camp says something. If Macklin did have a chest infection I don't think that is as bad as a hip injury that keeps you out of proper training for weeks. Also Macklin had no excuses in his fight before yet he still didn't do that well.

There are periods when Macklin does seem to have real class but if those classy combinations don't finish off his opponent then he doesn't have another answer. Barker can fight in different ways and because he can't just rely on his power he has other tricks to beat people and score knockdowns by putting people off balance.

I can see Barker being able to win world titles but can't see Macklin doing it.

Why not? The only guys Varon has lost to recently - one is a long-time belt holder and the other is on a cusp of a world title shot. Even if you go over his early record, a KO loss to Scott Dixon isn't too bad, he was good enough in his day to stop Moore.

The Spaniard fought well, showed good fundamentals and speed and wasn't phased by any of Macklin's punches, not that they seemed to have much snap on them anyway.

I think Macklin's level is European. He could make it interesting for Seb Sylvester but SS only knows one way of fighting and he will meet Macklin ring centre and trade.
